Derp. I'm umming and ahhing between Further and Distant; does Distant tend to squish people up against the edge of the map?
EDIT: It seems to, so it'll be Further.

One question though. I like your one winner, avoid helping others win, just help each other stopping the monster philosophy, but what about tech trading then? Is it allowed or not? If it is allowed, it would greatly help those seeking out early "alliances". And is it a com or no-com game?
I think I would prefer a non-com no tech trade game myself due to the less time involved, but then again I have not decided to join yet and all the other people have perhaps a lot of self isolating time on their hands and want to bring on the full diplomacy
Anything that's not explicitly prohibited is permitted. So, tech trade all you want and if you want to communicate with others - go for it. If you don't want to communicate with others, just tell everyone who approaches you to take a hike

Or just talk with your Colloidal Phasers.

Diplomacy is permitted and encouraged (a no-communication game makes the monster's job easy ), including tech-trading. I just won't recognise multiple people as winning, so if your ally starts to become the monster you might want to ready those knives and sound out some alternative allies.

7-8: Medium Sparse
9-10: Medium Normal
11-12: Medium Dense
13-14: Large Sparse
15-16: Large Normal
Medium dense.
The jump to Large Sparse is quite significant in terms of design.
Could there be a cutoff for new players, and then a few days to get a final design in? A design for dense might not work in a sparse. I would like to know the final size before I submit my final race (not that I have submitted yet... but I thought I was ready to...)

Sparse to normal is only a 30% increase, but from Sparse to Dense is a 60% increase...
That's quite significant, particularly in terms of scanners, and early scouts, as well as refuelling point throughout the game.
Obviously we're now down the sparse/normal, which is a less major issue.

With players trickling in at the rate they are it's quite probable we'll be locked to Large Normal significantly before the 20th, but if not I'll allow a few more days to finalise races.
This whole "oh no my super-optimized race design is the wrong one for this universe!" problem is best avoided by having a generally good design that will do well in almost any map.
Some people like the idea of playing around a theme. Not all themes work well in every universe. Sometimes they need to be scrapped, sometimes they can be modified. For myself the game is more around finding a fun theme that is also viable. Not everyone falls into the I-have-to-super-optimize-my-race-so-I-can-win category.
