Time for a Vanilla game - simple(ish) rules for a basic game of Stars! Host (me) will NOT be playing.
Number of planets per player as close to 40 as possible, universe set into a giant ball of planets. The horoscopes in this universe are WEIRD. Seriously, think about the astrological charts these guys have to make!
Acc BBS is on. No Pubic Player Scores.
Random Events are On.
At least 6 players.
No pregame alliances. Any skill level welcome.
Communication allowed, only 1 player set to Friend at any time.
No CAs, or JOATs with NAS.
Victory settings: High score at 2550 or player consensus. No more than 2 in an alliance.
Schedule
0800 GMT every day through 2430. After 2430 the game will switch to M-W-F. After 2475 the game will switch to M-Th. Changes outside of that will require majority vote of players.
Everyone starts with two delay requests, and those surviving through 2475 get a third. Requests may be used to delay no longer than two regularly scheduled gens, and may be split at hosts discretion.
Standard Rules: The normal cheat disclaimer applies.
Player Exploitable Bugs / "Features"
Repair after gating, chaff, ISB trumps IT gate scanning, split fleet dodge are allowed.
Mine damage dodge and mine damage allocation are allowed.
Do not cause target list overload: do not cause more than 100 of your fleets to be at any one location.
Do not cause battleboard overflow: do not send more than 75 of your tokens into a battle (merge happens after battle).
Do not put alpha or beta torps on ships with more than two engines.
No explicit ban on minimum damage, but the last two should be adequate to nerf it.
AR exception: Alternate Reality PRT may build up to 6 cheap colonizers (Colonize without Colonizer), anytime up to 2415.
Anything else on the Known Bugs (JRC3) - Player Exploitable Bugs / "Features" list is disallowed. See the list in the Must Know section of the forum.

Please count me in.
Question about battleboard overflow. 75 fleets looks to me strange. Sounds like "no chaff allowed"

I'm interested.
How dense this ball of planets will be?

vmanuel wrote on Thu, 30 August 2018 00:53So far we've got five interested:
Ludek, we're looking at medium density for this. Should make for some entertainment without dragging it out toooo much. Once I get feeback on GTP, I'll work on another scenario like that one, so expect another game by year's end after we get this one started.
Not sure I understand what you mean. I see 2 possibilities:
- It will be medium sized universe with planets as close to <number of players>*40 so it will be denser if more player join
- you mean normal star density and variable size of universe depending on number of players (and thus planets)
I'm asking about this because sparser universe is more valuable become things allowing to cross long distances (like IFFE,ISB LRT, IT PRT or good engines) and broader habitality
and I obviously started thinking on kind of race I want to play.
What about ship trading and tech trading? I assume it will be alowed.

Hi Vmanuel.
Let's assume there is 6 players playing.
Can you please generate the world for 6 players (having e.g. 6 Humanoid in it) and make the world public so everyone here understand in which universe we are playing.
If possible - may be also create the world fo 10 players, so we can see the difference.
IMHO, this indeed can help understand what "giant ball of planets" is and prepare our races accordingly

Ringo

It has been a long time for me since I have played - I think I would like to try.
The problem I have is that I no longer have any 32-bit Windows computers. Is there a guide posted somewhere? Or a way to have Win10 emulate a 32-bit install?
Thanks!

I have Oracle VM VirtualBox installed. Inside that I installed my old Vista OS, and installed Stars! in that.
It makes it a bit more annoying to play, as I have to open the VM every time there is a new turn. I have to download the turns inside the VM, because getting them via email (outside the VM), and trying to put them in the right place into the VM also a pain.
But it works and I can play.

Okay, I genned a universe of six races in a hexagonal shape, with zero adjustments for race habitat. In a real galaxy, you would see much better green/yellow/red distribution. This is just to give everyone a clue about the universe size and what to expect.
I thought about expanding the universe a bit more to make planets harder to catch, but I think I'll stick with this one for now.
Okay, races are now requested within the next two weeks. Once I have all races in, I'll take a week to gen the game, and we'll get started.

Yes, that's an adequate description of the universe. There will be roughly 5-8 planets within a 100ly radius.
As for post-processing, I establish the habitat of each race and look at the surrounding galaxy. Then I move planets around within 200ly so that there are a relatively equal representation of green/yellow/red within your zone. If your race has 3/5 planets green, then 3/5 of the planets within 200ly will very likely be green. I do my best to level the playing field without looking at who's playing which race. So practicing with Your own race does pay off.
