There are ~360 planets in medium dense galaxy, compared to 640 in a large dense one. This would indeed constitute a significant increase from 45 to 64 planets per player. On the other hand, there would be only 36 planets per player if we have 10 players in medium dense.
Switching to large normal (512 planets) for 10 players would make ~51 planets per player.
Question: just what number of planets per player we're aiming at?
Kicks has changed to PP two posts ago. HE and CA are free at the moment.

A large/dense would be too big, IMO.
A large/sparse changes things.
I'm currently playing a large/sparse with 6 players. There were vast areas that were unclaimed until the 2460s. It could probably work ok with 8, but the sparse settings really limit the ability to operate without IFE and tight hab races.
I'd be willing to try it, if that's the consensus, but would probably prefer an 8 player game.
I think that a PP race could work with settings like this. They can save terraforming resources by spending boranium on yellow planets. It could work, but would take a lot of planning.

Hi!
DarthStar wrote on Thu, 10 December 2015 14:10Also having a larger universe will simply mean the game takes longer to play out.
True. But larger uni means more work. I'm talking about over an hour for average turn, over two when things heat up, each second day, for next 4-5 months. Not every player is ready for that commitment.
I strongly suggest limiting planet count to about 40 planets per player. If you have problem with distances, you can always "stretch" the uni.

Gents,
is there anything else we need to discuss regarding the game setup? At this rate, we won't start the game before New Year.
Since Lqdtr dropped out due to RL, and we have a replacement ready, I suggest that bklooster2 take the JoAT spot, and let's start playtesting and submitting races to a trusted third party who will verify the races and set up the game. IIRC, Iztok has volunteered to verify the racefiles.

Here I am again, recovering from the shingles.
Pls make an effort to read all the msgs before posting, to avoid any confusion.
A small summary: we had got 8 positions taken, the idea of extending to 10 wasn't generally accepted so we'd better stick to the original plan.
A player had to leave his joat prt due to RL.
The first interested player (luckily we got more than one) who posts here can take the joat.
As soon as the joat shows up, we'll have a week for testing before starting.
Then we will be ready to start.
Iztok, will you be our kind host ?
