Race file won't open in one directory, will open in another directory |

Has anyone had this happen before?
Short version:
1) I try to open a race file in directory X. Stars gives an error.
2) I copy the race file to a different directory.
3) I open the race file in that directory. No problem.
Long version (because there are several variables here):
I am receiving race files by email.
I create a new folder on my PC for these race files. Something like ...\stars\pbems\hosting\gamename\races.
I download the race files.
Dropbox synchronizes everything with my VM. (In just a few seconds; I'm at work with a very fast internet connection.)
I have Stars already open on the VM. I try to open one of the race files.
Stars gives an error: "Can't open file <full path and file name*>"
*HOWEVER! The file name matches the intended race file, but has a .xy extension instead of a .r1 extension.
As part of troubleshooting, I create a new subfolder in a completely different path under the root stars folder. Something like ...\stars\races\tmp.
I copy the race files to the new folder. I open them with Stars. No problems whatsoever.
Same race files, different folders, different results.
Meanwhile, when I navigate to other folders to test other races, some work, and some don't (giving same error messages as above, referring to .xy file instead of .r1 file).
ALSO! In some folders, if a race is in the same directory as a turn file for a game with the same name, Stars opens the turn file instead of the race file (matching the oddness of the error message referring to the xy file rather than the r1 file).
Anyone seen this mess before?

I have that problem with stars! notebook .snb files.
They seem to work only in root directories and not in subdirectories of dropbox.
I can't save image files in any directory either, only in root directories (or probably non-dropbox directories).
I am not sure if it's similar to your problem or not,so I'll ask if
a. both directories are subfolders of dropbox or not?
b. If both are, is one shared and the other isn't?
c. Where is the stars folder saved? (with the executable).
On a side note, I got a notification of this thread creation, but I usually don't get any notifications of replies posted... Strange.
the .xy and .r mixup is strange. I wonder if it's linked to Windows's default opening instructions, but it seems highly unlikely.
Can you check by changing your stars root directory to some other temporary folder (so that windows asks you which file to open .r/.m files again).
(Edit - there is a way to remove your default opening files / removing file linkages in windows xp), but I can't open my VM right now.)

Depth of folder structure.
I tested an 8-level file with a full path length over 100 characters, and received no error. All of the tested 9-level and 10-level paths were under 100 characters.
