This is probably in the manual but I'm lazy so I'll ask the forum and save me some time; here goes.

I just got a new computer and in the process of migrating my data, I migrated all my Stars files as well as my .ini file. Question is will Stars work long term or will it think it's missing the serial number. I don't want the it to think it's a demo or pirated copy and do nasty things down the road. Will I need to reinstall the game and reload the serial number or is it encrypted in the .ini file.

Thanks for your help.

It'll just ask for the serial code when you first run it.

I am so glad you asked before the really bad things happen to you. I wouldn't worry about it much. Often nothing happens. Just sometimes it'll mess you up really really bad. And there won't be a damn thing you can do about it. Nod
One day you'll be in the middle of a real tough battle situation, about to lose it all, and you download your next turn and Stars! will call you a usurper even. And you'll miss your next several turns as if you didn't even do them. And your life will turn blue. The blue diamond will become your dominant color on AutoHost. And you'll cry and pull your hairs out and nothing you do will help much at all. You'll spend hours on the net researching for solutions to no avail. Lots of answers will flood your e-mail boxes but nothing works and the blue goes on and on. You'll try other games but they just don't do the same thing as Stars! did for you. And slowly death sets in as you realize it's over. Stars! is a thing of the past now and it's time to move on. And your hopes for Supernova are stronger now than ever and you know that it will save you soon as it is coming anyday now. And by now you remember you are still married and have two children. And you rename them as you can't find their serial numbers either. Smirk
Finally you'll find another serial number from some foreign european country and you'll begin to feel better some. And people at work will say you look different somehow. Was it Viagra? And you tell them, no, it was Stars! And they won't have a clue what happened. But many will watch the stars often after this, looking for some solutions to their problems. But then you realize that this country you got the serial number from begins with a F just like your situation began with a F. But you don't let this worry you. You continue to hope and hope turns to joy and joy turns to fruit. And you are back! You are reborn. The Stars! community cheers and welcomes you. Those that don't remember you that is. But all the games you left behind are over now. And noone likes you much as they lost pitifully because you dropped out of their games and ruined their alliances and let the monsters eat up all your territory and they got wiped out because of it. Crazy
No I wouldn't worry about moving your Stars! Not at all. Well, at least not for a month or two. Do you feel lucky punk? Well, do you? Twisted Evil
And here is the wisdom from the ancients. Don't let the situation drive you nuts. Remember what the great and wiseguy Confusingness said about going nuts. You can be a squirrel or you can be a man about the situation. There are always two solutions to every problem. The positive and the negative. The squirrely way and the manly way.
"Squirrel climb tree and crack nuts. Man climb tree, fall, and then crack nuts." Smirk
Yep there is much wisdom hidden in those walnut trees. Some say the walnut is the son of the beech tree you know. But this is only theory. Even so there is much to learn from nuts. Nuts are wise and live a long long time because they move slow. Much slower than the rest of us. They just hang there and exist mostly. While the rest of us buzz around like ants on a hill. They just hang there and watch and learn our ways.
Hope this helped relax you some? Crazy

I thought that as long as the .ini file was transfered Stars! wouldn't know the difference between the two computers. However if Stars! can tell that it is on a new computer, the easiest way to solve the problem would be to wipe Stars! and all of the associated things (as well as the .ini file) off of your new computer, obviously remembering to keep backups so you can get your games and races back. Then just install Stars! from scratch on your new computer, enter the serial number and then transfer the race and game files.

This is what I did when I got my new computer and it worked fine, except for that one game file that I deleted Crying or Very Sad

Whenever I have switched Stars! from one maching to another it has always been my practise to reinstall it... the main reason being that the first time that I moved it from one computer to another, it would come up and ask me for the Serial Number each and every year. It quite happily accepted the serial number though and let me play, I just found having to retype it each year a bit annoying.

Therefore, I recommend simply installing Stars! onto the new machine and transferring over all of the game files.

Shadallark

P.S. Delete and recreate any .x# files that you have created but not submitted as they contain not only the serial number information but some information about the machine that they are installed on... I do not know what exactly.

{edit: Fixed a typographical error}

And I have moved to a new machine and reinstalled Stars! and it worked fine after that. And I have reinstalled Stars! a few times when my hard drive died and it worked fine. And I have reinstalled Stars! a couple times when windows went bonkers and wouldn't work in a sociable manner anymore, and I had to also reinstall windows a couple times.
And basically I have learned one important thing from this:
I've been doing a helluva-lotta reinstalling!!! Puke2 Smirk

For Stars! 2.6, all you need is to copy the stars.exe and stars.hlp files, and the .ini file. It will still ask you for the serial number, but only the first time.

For version 2.7, probably best to reinstall.
