As I was reading about http://www.kickstarter.com and how some indie games are funded this way, I was just thinking: somebody should make a Kickstarter project for the stars sequel.

It's too bad the original sequel got dropped, but times have changed and it might be possible now to reach out to enough people to make it happen. If the original devs, or even another group with real passion and talent made a Kickstarter project, I know I'd donate. Wouldn't you guys?

This made me laugh http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/412101570/unemployment-q uest-a-non-epic-rpg?ref=card

Yeah id likely donate to such a project aswell, but our best bet may be to get Freestars! on that list rather then start from scratch.

You'd do better with Nova imo

First off, Not Me!!

I guess SOMEONE may need to find out what it would cost to have some company port Stars! into a current operating system.

We have the program, we basically have the OK to update it. We know the bugs and we have the math.

The end result should just be like Stars! 2.7J but in package something like Java or whatever runs on most systems today and in the foreseeable future. And with the know bugs fixed!!

If we got that info and setup something with Kickstarter then I could put up like US $250 to keep Stars! running and get some new people involved.

The thing about kickstarting something like Stars Nova, is that it seems strange using that platform to kickstart a project that is a direct clone of something that already exists.

However, I think the beauty of something like Kickstarter is that if the funding goal is reached, it then gives professional developers the resources to devote their time to the project, likely something more ambitious.

Barring a sequel (which wouldn't be a true sequel anyways I suppose, it would be like a new 4x game based on Stars concepts), I think even an updated, refined Stars would be welcome. For example the "attack who" part of the battle orders affecting minesweeping, being able to dodge by splitting fleets (which rewards a hellish kind of MM, from defender and attacker alike), and even the autobuild options all could use some tweaking.

Using Java or something similar to build a STARS! clone would be a disaster. Do you know how easy it is to cheat or edit a Java applet?

I'd fund Stars Nova or any quality opensource Stars! rewrite.
The original game with bugs fixed, improved UI and portability would be great already.
But some experimentation, new features and game aspects would be even better.

Anyone serious about doing a kickstart for a Stars! rewrite or (better yet) Supernova can have my $50 yesterday.

I could do US $100, as long as there is a good chance of it happening.
