Then I wish you the best of luck and advise you to make frequent backups of all your files. Even outdated virus data is vulnerable. Someday instead of 15 second problems you may have 15 hour or 15 day problems. I know, in the past year alone I have caught several virus trying to come in via e-mail in the Stars! community alone.

I don't really understand why people think antivirus programs provides bulletproof protection from the internet. Perhaps generally foolproof but antivirus programs won't help with spyware and so on.
I'm pretty confident about the integrity of files I open on my computer. My favourite virus attachment was a mail called 'Internet Security Update' purposedly coming from 'Microsoft Public Services'. I loved the wording, which included everyone's favourite 'Install now to..'
I'm more paranoid about my hard drive seizing up - my primary harddrive has failed twice already, but all my important data is on my secondary harddrive. I have backups of my most important documents on my university account or my brother's computer. Not the most frequent ones, but they'll do.

Probably nothing on Earth other than God is 100%, but when you get shot at it is better to have a bullet-proof vest on than nothing at all? Spyware detectors are also available. Spyware can slow your system down considerably. Maybe even just 10 or 15 seconds.

Yep. What about the files that are activated before you read them? How will you stop them? There are literally thousands of viruses with new ones cropping up every day, and there are tens of thousands of subjects used by virus emails for example. There is likely no way possible for you to know all these by memory. Therefore I suspect you are playing with fire rather than playing it safe by not using some sort of protection. Even if you save your data, you still have the difficulty of trying to remove the virus from your system once activated as it may attack many system components including registers, etc. Then there are the viruses that make the hard drive unusable.

Does the University use virus software? I would be surprised if they didn't as they surely use the internet also. If so, then why?

Jukka_M wrote on Mon, 05 May 2003 01:53 | I too don't understand the on-going virus hystery. Now I don't have the latest numbers, but I'm fairly certain that 98% of all virus cases are caused by M$ products combined with stupid users. I've never had any viruses during the last 10 years.
The world's cheapest way of preventing 98% of viruses, stop using Outlook (Express).
|
90% of the virus problems are caused by 90% of the hackers that want to infect 90% of the computers 90% of which use IE. Therefore the IE users are the largest number of victims by default of the hacker's goals.
Outlook Express, most widely used, is not the problem but the biggest target of deviant programmers. If Netscape had 90% of the business they would get 90% of the problems as they would become the primary target audience.
If you haven't had a virus in 10 years, then bless you my son, and may the force continue to be with you. Either that, or you have no mail. I had three attempted virus hits from Stars! related emails in the past few months alone, and so did a couple of other people I know in Stars! community. Right Wayne?

For spyware. I prefer Ad Aware 6. It finds that kind of stuff, and ad ware obviously. And the version I have is free (better version for $)

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ <---- online virus scanner. Takes a while on a 56k - but it's always 100% up-to-date and it's a good way to check your system for a virus.
The hotmail trick from gible is a solid idea. Congrats.
Fact: The vast majority of virus made worldwide are made by the anti-virus companies. This is for several reasons...
1. to make sure they are one step ahead of bored people at home with nothing better to do.
2. to sell more virus scanners.
I'm happy for them to do this. It's no different than PC security companies hiring hackers to break up their system... so they can plug and fix any holes they have.
And that's no different to safe makers, who again hire the best safe crackers to crack their safes
ad infinitum

Hotmail is in itself a cestpool. Never saw so much trash mail, sex, organ enhancement, porno offers, etc, etc, as comes via hotmail. I don't support Emenem either or any other trash like Madonna who say or do anything to make the big buck without regard to what it may do to society as a whole, especially young people who are developing their minds, like some of you on this site. An ethical person has to draw a line somewhere between good and bad and right and wrong and I draw my line there. Sure with Hotmail you can filter everything that comes in, but still some garbage will get through. Not to mention the majority of Stars! cheaters that have been caught were using Hotmail. And many that like to cheat and use dual identities to play more than one race.

yeah, and... Chemical companies hire vandals so they can sell more paint removal products... and
"I've got some ocean front property in Arizona.
From the back porch you can see the sea.
If you'll buy that, I'll throw the Golden Gate in for free"
What source reference do you have to back this claim "to sell more virus scanners"? Mad magazine?

There's a difference in hiring an expert to find a weakness in your system and fix it versus hiring someone to break illegaly into other systems and steal from them, be it information or property.

If thats what if takes to keep spam away from my real email box(the one I pay for) then thats fine with me....which is why my hotmail address is the one given to every website that insists on having one, which is turn is why I get so much spam. Unfortunately becuase I've had my hotmail account for so long I now get so much spam that after a day or so they threaten to close it for taking too much space so its now kept perpetually closed and I reactivate it whenever I need to use it. Even with it being active for 5 minutes I usually manage at least 1-2 pieces of spam.

Just like guns, VCRs & kazaa, hotmail is merely a tool. Its what you use it for that defines what sort of person you are. My GF doesn't give her hotmail address out to sites the way I do and she gets only a handful of spam a year.

Right Blue, twice at the same time as you and a couple of other times also.
I just make damned sure to cross check everything and also run Housecall once a week.

Steps to avoiding hotmail spam, but still using hotmail to check "dodgy" e-mails.
1. Buy a domain name (about £2 for a .co.uk if you look hard enough 123-reg.co.uk is what I use)
2. Set up an e-mail address e.g. bum@domainname.co.uk to forward to your hotmail account e.g. bum@hotmail.com
3. Set this e-mail forwarding to ONLY accept e-mails from which every address you actually use. Also set it to bounce every other e-mail with no contact for help details.
4. Never ever ever ever ever give out your hotmail address... ever.
That should stop your account getting spammed and as long as you don't tell anyone your hotmail address, and as long as you ticked the right boxes when signing up, the only companies that manage to spam you are law breaking since they are using information you have given no-one permission to actually use. Send them a nice law threatening e-mail and they should stop.
Tip to also stop being spammed on your normal account...
1. Send an e-mail from a different account than the one you specified would be able to reach your hotmail account - something like "postmaster@domainname.co.uk"
2. Wait for the e-mail to bounce back since it can't reach the address.
3. Hit reply to the spam e-mail.
4. Copy the full e-mail details and alter the bits to apply to whatever spam you got.
5. Send the e-mail back to the spammers using the e-mail address from step 1.
This works about 80% of the time for me. Most spammers pay attention to returned e-mails and then update their database - mostly because they pay for spamming and obviously don't want to spam non-existent addresses. Some don't care.
