Is this normal? I thought they should be all equidistant from each other... and this is the second time I'm seeing this happen.

Any ideas?

Definitely weird. I have never seen anything like that, starting positions have always been equidistant (or as close to equidistant as possible) in the battles I have seen.

What's the Player #s and Relationships? Were any fancy battleorders being used? Sherlock

It's at Gorby, vanilla 2012, this year.

cc, ash, me and suki.
player icons are the same Smile.

I can go through my archives and find the other year where this happened as well, if needed.

Is there a non-participant player at the location?

Same thing happened in a same game (Vanilla) a few turns earlier. My fast, unarmed scout (which would have escaped under normal circumstances)started in upper left. An enemy base was in lower left. An enemy stack in lower right. But instead of final enemy being in upper right, it was in upper center, just three squares away from me.

Game message said three races involved in battle.

With my ship destroyed at end of turn, the scan showed just the three enemy ships.

Positioning looks like a mix of three-race starting positions and four-race starting positions.

Could this possibly be related to the "allies attack eachother" bug?

the chaff didn't attack each other and all the ships had default battle orders.
iirc, to trigger it a ship has to have specific player attack orders?

Wouldn't surprise me. But looks like there must be something else added to this particular snafu. Sherlock

Were your ships unarmed?
It looks like the setup for a 3 player fight, plus your ships.
Also did anyone attack your ships as part of the battle?

in the above jpg, the top left corner ships were unarmed rouges and privs.
the base was an empty base.
the bottom left ship was a chaff, while the bottom right was a scout.
top left was enemy to remaining 3, the other 3 were all allied to each other.

As bystander pointed out earlier, the number of participants as per the battle report were 3, not 4.

Were there any other ships present at the colony but not involved in the battle i.e. friend to everyone?

Here's my idea,

First off, it's useful to know that there is only one armed ship present and a unarmed space dock, also that players 1, 2 & 3 are Friends.

It appears that the battleboard was setup for 3 players as players 1, 2 and 3 (in player order) are in the correct position for 3 players and then the 4th player was put into the first empty position the computer came to, ie position 1, second down second in.

I recreated it in a test bed and I got the same starting postions as show above.

I changed it so that player 3 was no longer friends with anyone and I got the standard 4 player board. ie. Player 1 & 2 are friends, 3 & 4 have no friends.

Next I change it to Player 1 & 3 and 1 & 2 are friends. Players 2 & 3 are enemies and 4 is enemies of everyone and I got the starting positions show above again.

And that's all the time I have right now.

Little Eddie

Edit: when I have time I will check

Adding weapons to the Dock
Play around with the Friends some more.

I thought I mentioned this when I made the Starbase FAQ, seems that I didn't. It has been years (must have been 2005) since I tested it but IIRC it has to do with the fact that the SB is unarmed/empty.
