This is a true story, right before the Mystery trader sent me and my fellow freighter captains on our way in it's spare lifeboat, it took me aside and told me this short tale of woe and gave me a tetratoid with mysterious data inside.

Here is his story as he related it to me and the movie that was on the tetratoid.

:::::Retarded questions alert:::::

What software did you use to create that?

And can it be done purely from the final turn? or do you have to hunt out backups/do it turn by turn?

Looks like Xtreme Borders to me.

As far as I know you have to insert all data each year, or every 5 years, depends on how accurate you want this to be.
However the first years might be a bit off since nobody has a complete view of the universe from the start (there are exceptions of course).

Very nicely done McKulz! I often wish I could see this for all my games ...

I agree that the pictures appear to have come from Xtreme Borders but I think that freakyboy was asking what I was going to ask... What did you use to combine all those plots?

I am doing one of those exceptions right now. During the game Partners Back in Time I am hosting (and playing an observer race) and have access to everyone's turn files. Therefore, I am going to be creating maps of the WHOLE universe using each years data, and then at the end of the game (if I can figure out how to animate it), show the progression of the Universe from start to finish.

Ah yes, well you can dump a .bmp file of each year, turn that into a gif and no doubt you can find a program on the web to make an animated gif out of those. Can't give you any name of such a program, a long time since I used one, but they can't be that hard to find. I did this with Stars! Notebook .bmp dumps before Xtreme Borders was out.
Or maybe you can just use the "Movie Images" option in Xtreme Borders itself? Wink

Yup, that was one of the exceptions I had in mind, you're players should be very gratefull that you are going though such an effort!
Take a look at Xtreme Borders, in the Tools menu you'll find the option I mentioned above, seems you only need to generate the .p?? files for each race in the right directory and run the "Batch Image Processor". Maybe you're lucky and you can find a command line option to automaticly dump each .p?? file ...

Micha basicly got it right Sherlock, there's ~160 images, one for each turn (except for a couple where I forgot Embarassed). I used irfanview to convert all the .bmp to .gif and CoffeeCup GIF Animator to animate it.

Both are nifty programs that CoffeeCup can also turn .gif into flash animations.

There is a command line option to dump the .p?? files, but I never saw a movie option in Xtreme Borders, is there a new version? The version I have only saves the map as a .bmp with the year in the name.

Can you guess what PRT each race is? Winner will get a fancy prize Razz

Looking at 1.7.0, I recently (a week ago) downloaded it again, including a new update (beta).
Didn't test it so not sure if it works ...

Hehe, that sounds like fun, but not that easy without knowing a bit more how you got the data on this (all players files or just the scanning of one race? the year the gif starts?), but looks to me the red one is an IT?

If not, what version of Xtreme Borders are you looking at? I am using 1.6.8 because I was having trouble downloading the 1.7 beta. There is no "Tools" menu item and definitely no "Batch Image Processor"! Confused2

AH! You replied while I was replying! I will have to wait until I can download version 1.7 beta then.

If you can't download it I can email it to you if you like. It's 105kB.

This is what the page Pirate Retreat says:

Pirate Lord wrote:

Xtreme Borders is currently being worked on by our scientists. Planned improvements are: Automatically produce images for a game that uses a backup value greater then one (i.e. for animated maps).

That feature seems now to be in place (but I haven't tested it yet).

Thanks for the tip about the new version of Xtreme Borders Micha. I finally managed to download it this morning. I will give it a try tonight (local time) and let you know how easy it is and the results that can be expected.

That would explain the strange behaviour of not expanding to fill the open space that they had and why they were still fighting amoungst themselves when you were clearly in control.

Also, this would explain why the map seemed to focus on the red. There was no information outside of red's area of control.
