Many of us that played in Stone Age Slaughter 4 enjoyed the game enough that we want to play it again. We will modify the rules a little to try and balance the PRTs. Here is the rule set from Stone Age Slaughter 4:

Quote:

Players: 8 players
Universe: Small, normal, distant, SLOW TECH, ACC BBS, random events.

Victory: 100% consensus vote from remaining players, alliance win possible (but limited to two).

Schedule: M-T-W-T-F until at least turn 30. Move to M-W-F when at least two players have requested a slowdown.

Race Limitations: ALL races MUST take weapons expensive and the Bleeding Edge Tech LRT. No factoryless HE. This means that the GR of the HE cannot be more than 10(20) and factories cannot be less than default. Joat cannot take NAS. There are otherwise no restrictions. Races will be verified by the third party prior to start.

Special Rules: NO TECH TRADING ALLOWED. No scrapping, no pop dropping allies for tech gain, no wolf-lamb. You may not scrap MT ships for tech gain or share MT parts through scrapping. You may trade ships to other players, but if scrapping those ships would produce tech gains, they may never be scrapped (design may be deleted, however). Sending an "observer" ship to watch a battle in hopes of gaining tech is allowed, as long as the battle is between enemies.

Gaining tech through legitimate battle with enemies (in space or through invasion) is allowed and encouraged, however.

NO PRE-GAME ALLIANCES ALLOWED. This ruins the game for everyone.

Cheats allowed: Healing after gating, chaff, split-fleet dodge. All other cheats forbidden (cheap starbases, etc).

I am looking for a 3rd party to check races and a Host is needed.

We also decided on no random events in SAS4 as the MT could unbalance the game.

Stone Age Slaughter 4 was won by an HE, CA alliance. I thought that CA wouldn't be so powerful with the low number of planets per player. That turned out to be incorrect with the lone CA player doing very well. The HE race also seemed to have an advantage with the low planets per player. Rolf designed a 2 immune HE that took advantage of this, but was fast enough at the beginning to not have the issue of being too weak early as many low growth HE races are.

So my initial thought for SAS6 was to ban HE and CA. But some of the players had an idea to balance CA in this game setup, ban OAs, TT and give them a handicap. This seems reasonable. I was also thinking about giving Joat and IT a handicap, mainly because of their starting techs give them an advantage early. So here are my thoughts for race restrictions for this game (this is open for discussion and modification):

HE banned
CA, No OAs or retro bombs. Cannot take TT, 50 points leftover to defenses.

Joat cannot take NAS, 25 points leftover to defenses
IT - 25 points leftover to defenses

We had also talked about some restriction to SD detonating minefield, but I really don't want to police that. If anyone has other ideas to balance the PRTs in this game, I am open to suggestions.

Note, host is playing in this game. Players so far:

Host, ManicLurch
LittleEddie
rolfverberg
Cieply
Goober
Orange

We have room for 2 more slots. Also, we will need a 3rd party to check races. Any volunteers?

Thanks,
David

How many months does a game generally run for?

I received my game files for SAS4 on 8/27/2011 and the game ended last week. So I would assume this game would last 5 or 6 months as well.

I would be happy to check race files.

I am currently in two others games so can't join this one.

I played in the last SAS and it was enjoyable although I had very poor Ge on almost every planet apart from my HW so building the economy was very difficult. However, I was surprised by how quickly the tech took off amongst other players - I was expecting the game to be settled by battles between DDs and FFs but by the time the proper battles in my area started there were BBs around.

The proposed balancing of PRTs and LRTs should help to even things up.

HE banned Razz Because of a fast 2i He sounds familier to me Twisted Evil
Twisted Evil

CA need a much higher Handicap normal 200-250 Points the instand terraforming also works with the normel terraforming you get.

Joat should be 50-75 no NAS

IT should be 50 at least

Very little incentive to be CA now, the initial econ boost from instant terraforming is not enough to compensate as slow tech and no TT means that very little terraforming can be done for a long time. It is now a regular race without any real advantages as compared to the other races. Perhaps reducing the penalty to 25 points and keeping the retro bombs as they have some but limited effect.

FYI - I will not be playing CA. It is time to try another favourite or a new PRT.

I'd like to play in this.

Learned a lot from playing in SAS5. Really miscalculated the effects of the game settings, especially Slow Tech compounded by Bleeding Edge. Would like to put into play a bit of what I learned.

I would like to play too.

I see two others have beat me to it, though, so I guess that will only be if someone drops out before the start of the game.

Thank you for that, then I just have to create a race - Though I have a pretty good idea what I want already. Still, I haven't played in a game with slow tech before, and this is also a lot fewer planets than I am used to.

Thanks BeeKeeper for volunteering to check race files.

Player list:

Host, ManicLurch
rolfverberg
Cieply
Goober
Orange
Magister Ludi
AlfredWAB
craebild

First alternate
Altruist

If someone else drops, Altruist will be in.

I don't see any suggestions for modifications to the rules from any of the people playing in the game. If there are no suggestions from the players, then we will proceed with the rules as posted. Deadline for race files will be this Friday. Please send race files to BeeKeeper, along with race file passwords.

Thanks,

My e-mail address is: rjohnlaidler "at" btinternet.com

My understanding of the race rules are:

HE banned

CA, No OAs or retro bombs. Cannot take TT, 50 points leftover to defenses.

Joat cannot take NAS, 25 points leftover to defenses

IT - 25 points leftover to defenses

If this is wrong speak now or forever hold thy peace - as the saying goes.

Just a thought...

The game announcement says generation will be M-T-W-T-F, slowing to M-W-F later. I for one don't have a problem with turn generation during the weekend, but what do the rest of you say ?

I also notice that SAS4 and 5 generated at 22:00 GMT. That could be more convenient for me, but I can live with that.

One more thing. Will there be a private game forum ? I see there wasn't for SAS4, but was for SAS2 and 3 and is for SAS5.

What I normally do is set the game on a flex schedule for the early years. This way if all turns are in, the game will gen ahead of schedule. This means a turn will gen on the weekend if everyone has submitted. But I typically won't schedule a turn to gen on a weekend.

We didn't have a private game forum simply because we didn't ask for one. If you want a private game forum, we just have to ask Ron for one when the game is set up.

Some of the differences you may see is I did not host SAS2, 3 or 5.

Race files are coming in and all have checked out so far except one which was corrupt. I have e-mailed the player and I am sure it will be sorted (Update; It has now been sorted) but I suspect the race file might have been renamed. Remember this is a known bug - you cannot rename a race file after it has been created.

Please also give your race file a unique name - SAS6 is already taken so we don't want another. I am not sure if Stars! can handle two race files with the same name - but I know it will confuse the h*ll out of me!

Could players also please put their playing name in with their e-mail. Some I know but there are a few players in this game who I might struggle to identify.

You can see the current status of submitted race files in my post above. To prevent blushes the owner of the corrupt file is not shown.

Race files can be amended at any time up to the deadline of course. Just send me an e-mail with the revised file.

If anyone has sent me a race file and it is not shown please let me know. I will have a rummage in the Trash.
