I'm interested. I'm returning to the game after a long hiatus. I think I played two games against human players many years ago, and got crushed both times.

I don't think he could give you a big enough Race Point disadvantage.. Maybe 500 points left to defenses... Laughing

Edit: 500 might not be enough for the Master Cool

If all you got was beatings... then you probably qualify Smile

Still, you're not as "wet behind the ears" as me (I only played AIs before, entered the game "Knife Fight in a Phone Box 1",but had to bail out early due to a big HD failure (which kept me from recovering my passwords for quite a while until a passing IT guru miraculously retrieved the data).

I'm thinking about joining... but I don't know if I can handle two games at once. Besides, I don't have a race at the ready, and I wouldn't want to replay the same race in a different setting.

Yes, it is quite nice to see a beginner's game. I just finished a game (The Wheel of Life IV, which my team won), but I don't think I can be considered a beginner.

I can help out with advice on race design if someone wants my help, though.

Do beginners' games usually get filled quite fast then? I'm beginning to worry a little that this game won't get started due to lack of interested beginners.

The setup seems oriented towards a very fast-paced game. Is that the best setup for a beginners' game?

I suspect it may just be a timing issue. I would probably have gone for this game but I went for Vanilla 2012 instead, which recently started, plus there is the Stone Age Slog game which also started recently.

There is a British saying about waiting all day for a bus and then 3 come along at the same time. Seems to be a bit like that with new games at the moment.

I am not sure what you mean by a fast-paced game. Most games start at one turn every 24 hours or so and then slow down to say 3 turns a week later. I have not found this fast-paced as turns in the early years are pretty simple if for no reason other than the player does not have many ships or planets to play with.

My advice, if you haven't already done this, would be to set up games against the AI while you are waiting fo the game to start. These games should be as close as possible to the real game in the sense of being in the same sized universe with the same number of opponents. Then just try different approaches so you know the order you are going to do research, how many scouts etc. I think you only need to go as far as about 2420 as beyond that the human game is likely to be so very different to a game against the AIs.

I was referring to the high density, relatively small universe for the number of suggested players, and AccBBS start. Players are going to be running into each other early, and ending up with relatively large, difficult-to-manage (for beginners) populations quite quickly. On the one hand, the game will likely be over quickly. On the other, the players are going to have to make more decisions per turn, which might not be such a good idea for a beginner's game.

I would have thought a game in a medium universe with normal density and no AccBBS (the defaults, basically) would be easier (and more familiar) to most beginners.

The AccBBS is very normal for games on here. It means you start with more pop so the first few turns are more useful. Otherwise the first week of play is likely to be a bit tedious.

I wouldn't worry about the size of the universe at this stage. Again, I suspect the idea is to make the game more interesting early on - without having to wait years to meet anyone.

However, see how many players sign up. If it is 8 or more then a Medium universe might be better but it is down to the host.

MaxMinerals basically makes all planets equal in terms of mineral concentration, which takes out the necessity to make choices about some of the planets being more desirable than other (because of higher concentrations of necessary minerals). For beginners, this makes the game considerably easier, and puts all players on a level field, in a sense. Thus, for a truly beginner game, this may be worth trying.

Just my my 2 cents

Max minerals means all planets start with mineral concentration 100% in all three minerals (with the obvious exception of the homeworlds of races that have put excess RW points in mineral concentrations).

This means that the total amount of minerals is higher (more than just twice as high, more like 3-4 times as high), so mineral shortages happen later, if at all.

While this is good for a beginner game in that it removes one of the complications of the game, most games do not play with max. minerals, so the players will have to take mineral shortages into account in later games, so they might as well start taking mineral shortages into account from the start.

The only game I've played is the "Show Me Your Moves" beginner game, where I showed them my moves and got crushed.

I'm not too thrilled about Max Minerals though, although I suppose it could be fun.

Welcome Amadeus.

We can talk about max minerals... I just thought it would be nice if you guys didn't have to worry about minerals in your beginner game.. although they are right... doesn't happen in the real world Wink

It's been a week, and only two players (and maybe a third) have expressed interest. So, here's a proposal, solely to see if it pulls in any more potential players. Have the game settings be entirely default: small, normal density, moderately distant positions, no special options, 3 or 4 players. Yes, it will be a slower, longer game, and thus require a longer time commitment, but it will also give beginners more time to think about their actions, and more time to recover from any mistakes. Classic Stars!, if you will.

four players would be OK as a minimum, especially if we can gen once per day without slowing down.

Would there have to be any rules against alliances?
