This game was

from the beginning.
The last time I counted, with the Count*, 12 was at least more then 6.
Now if you want to start a game with
Medium, packed, distant.
BBS checked
Only the first 6 players
Then I'm all for it.
* Count from Sesame Street
Edit:my second most favorite, after Bert and Ernie, of course I was 12 when the first program aired.

If I may chime in...
The medium packed universe will contain 540 planets, which leaves 45 planets on the average for each one of 12 players who have joined. I'd say that's a decent number of planets to build a sizable economic powerbase, and quite fast at that. At the same time it guarantees that we'll run into each other fairly early, triggering all sorts of interesting gameplay situations.
If we upgraded to large, this would make 910 planets, which makes almost 76 planets per player, over almost twice the galaxy area. This number of planets will take almost twice the time to colonize and build up, and quite a time will pass before players start encroaching on someone else's territories. IMHO, changing to large will make the first 50 years (at least) be spent mainly scouting, colonizing and building up the economy - something I've been doing for countless testbeds to date.
No Random Events (it was discussed to have it checked) adds an interesting twist to the game, and maybe lets those less "blessed" with mineral concentrations even out the odds with technology they may gain from MTs or artifacts. Then again, it might go the opposite route - but hey, that's the beauty of the game.
To sum it up, it seems to me that the host has thought out the concept of the game, and has a certain idea in mind. Let's just respect the host's idea and try it out. We have submitted our races, which means we're interested in playing this game - else we would just stay out, right?
Good luck to all participants... now let's kick some alien a$$
