Hello everyone,

I've been trying to get Stars! to run on my laptop for a while now but to no avail. Because I have the home edition of windows 7 on my laptop I can't have XP on virtualpc from Microsoft. However, I do have DOSBox but it is version 0.74 and on the wiki the instructions to get Stars! to work doesn't really make sense in my eyes with 0.74. Does anyone have DOSBox 0.74 with Stars! running on it that could help me? I know I could, if push comes to shove, dual boot my laptop with linux and run it under wine but I don't especially want to do that just for Stars!. Any help appreciated.

Craig

I had also problems with the portable VirtualBox downloadable in the wiki. Most of the time it had problems to start and crashed.

I solved this by creating a VM with VMWare and WinXP. There are several advantages to the Win98 VB: Runs faster and smoother, drag and drop of files from host to guest system and back, easier networking. I also installed all the 3rd party tools and a PDF reader within the VM, it works now like a breeze.

There are two problems: First, you need a XP license; second, the VM is not totally portable - you have to install the (free) VMWare player, meaning you need admin rights on the host system. Apart from these minor aspects, everything is fine, though. Smile

If you play on different PCs like me, carrying the VM on a stick is really comfortable. Ah, don't forget, the VM is much bigger than the Win98-VB - XP takes about 2 Gig.

Good luck,
fab
