Uncrowded? In the last diadochi game, enemies threw BBs 1400 lY to attack me (that is from Tunisia to Turkey iirc). Mining was problematic there. HG 14eff.

2 years ago I found myself fielding BBs against a shadow alliance of 2 ITs with Nubs and an IS who soon got them, while I faced a long slog of researching the last 8 Const levels with the leftovers from massive defensive shipbuilding.
It was a Huge/Normal with 13 players, several of which were defeated early, so no particularly crowded.
There was a race all right. And there were a lot of battles in what I called the BB era (but already was the Nub era for my enemies). There was a lot of conflict in the FF and CC eras too, but I wasn't involved in that.
All in all, an amazing game, with just enough epicness to make it worthwile despite the unfortunate lack of a final showdown.
I think sheer size made it possible, plus the fact that no-one surrendered without a fight.
Note: the Alien Miner helped several races to build their big fleets.
