Thanks m.a that helps a bit.

If we go 12 players in large/normal we'd have 42-43 per player. Someone did note that 51 may be a slight bit too many esp if you consider that means you'd have 100+ planets between two players. It might reduce some pf the epicness but it would also reduce some MM?

So 53 or 43 planets each?

If this was an all veteran game then I wouldn't mind though Smile

I would go for 43.
You have to remember that inevitably some teams are going to start winning. Each team they defeat/push back earns them planets.

Its possible we could end up with a face off of 2 teams each with 300+ planets.

Isn't that a big jump? Going from 10 to 12 players and large/normal to huge/normal? That's almost 300 more planets.

I see the ads for replacements now:
Wanted, replacements. Applicants need at least an extra 12 hours a week free time to do your turns. Likely more.
If you have a wife or girlfriend, say goodbye now, while you still have the time. Laughing

Understanding significant other Yes

Large Normal: approx 43 planets for 12 players, or 51 for 10.
Large Dense: approx 53 planets for 12 players.

IIRC 40/player is good for AR.

43 is a significant downwards leap. Many races won't be competitive enough. Confused

Don't go above Large whatever you do.

Not much difference between Normal and Dense in terms of planetary gaps (not like the jump to Packed).
Personally I'd also struggle to design a race that works well given a likely 50 planets and falls flat on it's face with only 40.

So 10 in Normal vs 12 in Dense vs 12 in Normal are only small changes, AFAIC.

You guys are all completely nuts. Ok so Large/dense it is. Waiting for 1 more, then you guys better be starting on your races so i can send them off to AlexTheGreat and get this insanity up on the roof so to speak.

Will update the first post with whatever changes and also with who wants to play.

I intended to join, but Large/dense is WAY above my planets_per_player and galaxy_size limits.

Do you realise what Large/dense means?
You'll have nubians before even meeting the guy from the opposite corner. With mineral fountains everywhere the real limitation will be the Stars! numbers limits. The MM-guys will burn out, the casual players will drop because they'll not stand the needed MM. In late game this thing will be simply too big to enjoy. Sad

My suggestion: split players in two small/packed or medium/normal games. If you do, I'll join.

Sorry Goober I can't believe I missed you! Smile I'll add you to the list

@Iztok
Hi! Yea it's gonna be a big game and I agree that it's going to be big. I do share your concerns about MM. The splotting up is a god idea that I hadn't thought about but perhaps we can make up some fancy winning conditions.

Roughly the layout of the galaxy will be as following, the 0 being team locations.

--0--
-0-0-
-0-0-
--0--

Team no. locations will be randomizes but for example

--1--
-2-3-
-4-5-
--6--

What if we have 2 games in one. there will be a winner between 1, 2 and 3 and a winner between 4, 5 and 6. The idea is to have 2 games, north and south, but with potential influence/interference from the other "game".

Allies and Empires: Allies being your team mate and Empires, North and South. Kinda like what happened in the cold war. At the end each "empire" will be strong and advanced that a conflict will potentially last forever.

Potential problems could be 2 vs 4 and 3 vs 5. Any ideas on a good reason/idea to split them up?

What do you guys think?

I reckon things will progress naturally much along these same lines without a need to set explicit rules. Teams will grow, others will be defeated, and we'll be down to 4, 3, or perhaps 2 big Teams that will slug it out to the bitter end. Deal

I agree tghat I don't want to loose the epic! But I also agree that a game like this is very big and can be MM intensive.

I don't think that having two victors is too much of fancy rules but I can see where it could be a problem with that configuration. I'm just worried about the MM of it. Smile

But yea If I can have all the race files in about a week or two we can start depending on the schedule of everyone.

And the best advantage of such an epic game is the epic diplomacy and backstabbing, which is negated by it being a team game. Sad

I remember my first game. 4 players in a Large Packed. We all quit at around 2420, once we realised how ridiculous the whole thing was.

Only true Warp-9-capable ships will be able to physically reach players other than your immediate neighbours, and then not at top speed the whole way. For a Galaxy Scoop ship to cross the universe from one side to the other will take over 15 turns. For the final war to finish, given a blitzkrieg-like front movement rate of 20 ly/turn across the entire front (that's 5-6 planets a turn, I haven't seen many wars quicker), would take a colossal 40 turns. Such a game will likely take 200 turns to finish, at the very least - that's a year and three months even at 3 turns per week.

You're crazy.

Bonne chance!

Guess you never heard of gates, wormholes and IT races, since you only expand through space? Cool
Epic games are supposed to end well into the 2500's not before, like many games. Of course, often there are earlier surrenders, when one team obviously is too dominant in the nubian era, after killing a couple of main enemy fleets in big battles.

PS 4 players in a large/packed can't be compared with 12 players in a large/dense. Apples and oranges.

I'm sure that something like what I proposed will happen naturally. two teams devouring all around them and meeting up. See who's the biggest and baddest and pummel each other till one gives up.

This will be an excellent learning experience for all since you only really learn stuff if you get beaten Twisted Evil

But seriously, get your races made and coordinated with your teamy Smile

PS
Also the guidelines for posting in this thread are listed at top of this forum:

Quote:

Replies to new game annoucements should fit the following conditions:
1. Confirmation that you are interesting in joining the game.
2. Question on game settings/rules.
3. Reply/clarification from game host on game settings/rules.
4. Pre-game announcements by game host.

Your last two posts: you're all nuts, and you're crazy don't even come close to the guidelines set by Ron Rolling Eyes
PS If you're not joining. Don't post here. Find another playground to howl in. Don't come to someone's game announcement and dish out negative crap to the people who are interested.

This game was intended to make AR playing much stronger than normal. Therefore the usual normal games are in a different reality.

Team mates will be placed at least 200ly or closer. Different teams will be as further away as team mates will be put. I'm still not 100% sure of the exact space but suffice to say that teams will be far away and team mates will be closer.
