Indeed. That's why most games seem to prefer small galaxies, or even restrict tech. Deal

But here we want some time and elbow room for races that otherwise wouldn't stand a chance. The increased potential for grand strategy will be a bonus. Twisted Evil

Only advantage (for me) was that it is a dual boxed set so there are two serial numbers - I'm trying to persuade a friend to play, he's fairly keen but his wife thinks he spends too much time at his PC anyway..

Medium dense sounds OK to me - still 45 planets per player for 8 players, but the empires should take off a bit quicker & lesser distances make the MM a bit easier.

The turn rate is the least set in stone of probably all settings of the game. Only the first 20 or so turns will be MTWTF since there's almost nothing to do. After that it's easily changed from 24h to 48h or whatever is needed. Holidays or most reasonable requests to hold the game is also acceptable Smile

Maybe in a 3 or 4 player team but solo or with just 2 players/team? Not my cup of tea. I suspect they would be too easily killed off even with a ban on "Kill Starbase" orders.

In fact I might make that a goal .... Twisted Evil

OK, sounds good. Count me in, please.

My son remembers me talking about how great a game this was and how I still think it is the best 4x game ever played. But I lost my 10 player copy on a move many years back. He found the game again and I'm working on getting codes. Anyhow, he'd like to join me in a team game some time. Maybe this one will work. I'm awfully rusty, haven't played in over 10 yrs. But my how great it was to find this site still alive. LOL

If we can find 10 players then 5 teams is also doable in a large/normal. I do agree with slightly longer travel distances but I can make the slightly more cramped of medium/dense work too on a 4 team game.

I'll put Carl up and a maybe from AlfredWAB and son Smile

There's a lot of resources/discussions and guides around on this site and this should still work. Some stuff I gathered over the years way back when I was in school. EDIT: Unfortunately only then first 2 gudies are working :/ I'll see if I have the stuff on my home pc and maybe just post a link or mail it.

That's also how I learned, by reading everything I could get my hands on. Also a good way of learning is testing out those race builds in the same universe we are going to play in. Likely a large/normal with 4-5 teams. Get a feel for the LRT's and what each race needs or wants in a universe like that.

One of the things that impressed me about rgcs was that even people engaged in bitter fighting in one or more games treated each other with so much respect and humour in the NG - partly I guess because the age-range was broader than seems apparent in postings in other forums/newsgroups concerning other games.

Cheers

I think I may have a couple of other guides somwwhere - I believe they're still on an HD I took out of an older PC that I was converting to be a diskless IP Cop or Smoothwall firewall/router before learning that the phone line couldn't support ADSL, let alone ADSL2+ (bah!).

I'll try & dig it out over the weekend - if they're different to those in your collection, I could email them to you for possibly adding in if you like.

Cool, that should make 8 players. We can wait for 2 more if we want 5 teams.

About the starting positions. We can have each player equal distance but next to their team mate or team mates close to each other and each team equal distance from each other. In the same cluster or in adjacent clusters.

Any preferences?

Whoopee, looking set for an early kick-off Smile

IMHO: I favour putting team members reasonably close to each other, but not adjacent - say 200 ly or so? Easy to trade tech once 100/250 gates are up. Teams should be equal distance from each other to make the start as balanced as possible.

Have you decided what the other settings like PPS & NRE will be?

Hi m.a

Great - 'PPS off' is good, & from what I've read browsing rgcs & SAH the MT in a large is likely to generate some rather entertaining shenannigans Twisted Evil

I'm assuming the numbers after players' names are team assignments, is that correct?

Yup, if that is agreeable. The teams are a bit static since the one team is father/son (good Wink ) and part of the reason for this game is so tat me at m.a can play in a team Razz
