But in no way a newbie to stars! ... I consider myself intermediate to advanced player.

You might see if someone is interested in dueling you. I have gotten soundly trounced by two Advanced players in duels so far and have learned an immense amount by doing so. What I suspect you'll discover is that, whatever your skills with the RW, your play needs to be tightened up. If you observe your opponents tactics closely you'll learn more in a shorter amount of time than 4-5 big pbem games can give you.

There's a big difference between playing Stars! as a single player game and a multiplayer game. If you haven't ever played against humans before I'd be careful about calling yourself intermediate/advanced. There are so many subtle things about playing against humans that you'll never experience against the computer.

Furthermore, you will soon realise that your diplomatic skills are just as important as how well you play the game. It is impossible to play well if you have enemies on all sides of you. I have seen a number of skillful players suffer because of their diplomatic incompetencies.
