Is this game definitely closed? I could have a race ready by monday if you would allow me to join?

Played one game on SAH, lost it though

I didn't mention this in the announcement. Though we probably don't want this to turn into a 5 verses 5 game, those games aren't as much fun and can get tedious. Unless someone objects, lets say only one ally at a time. Also, this is a one winner game, no team victories.

I'd prefer 2. That way a person in the middle, with 6+ neighbours, isn't so utterly screwed as they'd otherwise be. Laughing

Let's have a vote from the players then. Let me know how many allies we should be limited to. I would suggest that it be 1 or 2. Any more than two and you could spend most of your time just coordinating with your allies.

Yes, the game is closed. Adding another player at this point will change the number of planets per player and many have already been testing. Changing the settings would mean retesting their races.

You might want to send me a race anyway in case anyone drops. If someone drops or takes too long to send in their race file I will add you as a substitute.

One more thought, if there are enough other beginners out there that want to play, I might host another beginner game, so post if you want to play even though this game is closed.

That sounds reasonable. I would be fine with both.

I have another important question.
What are the requirements in game version and patches?

I'm playing 2.6i and tried to reproduce a few of the races that I found in several strategy guides. For some of the the "x points left" seems to differ from what I see in my game.
Could this be a version difference?

There are some giudes out there for older versions. Most Guides are for a special version. If you look at the Autohost wiki you will find many guides for 2.6/7.

How do you define ally? If we have a peace treaty are we allied?
Or does ally means tech trading, fighting together and so on?
If you mean the last I think we should only have on Ally at time.

To play on Autohost you need to be using Stars! 2.6JRC4 or 2.7JRC3, both of which can be downloaded here: http://starsautohost.org/kn2050.htm.

From a player vievpoint the only difference is that 2.7JRC3 has some sound effect which almost everyone switches off, and which can cause conflicts with some Windows versions if switched on.

I'm for 1 against all
or 1 allies

so 0 or 1

Allies are OK, but in a winner take all game, sooner or later you have to turn on them.

While you're right that alliances will eventually have to break, I think that having at least the option of 3 player alliances is a good idea. What's the downside of allowing it?

I'm with Eddie,

Since we're BEGINNERS, I don't really want to get bogged down with diplomacy. Especially if it's a 1 winner game. I really just want to get on with the whole thing. Alliances will eventually get in the way and have to be broken. Especially if you're trying to manage 2-3-4 different relationships. And that's my 2 cents.

In any case, my race file's been sent.

OK, my race file has also been sent.

Again on my version question:
I've downloaded the 2.6jrc4, which is required for Autohost if I got it right. Unfortunately my old serial no. is not working with this version. At least, I always get this annoying message "Your people suspect you as a usurper" and so on. Sad

So I guess, I'll have to get a proper serial from Ron, as described somewhere else (it was in the FAQ I believe).
Or is there another way for me to play?

I hope this doesn't cause any inconvenience with our starting game. I wasn't aware of this until a few days ago. So far, my version (obtained from abandonia.com) seemed fine.

It sounds like the serial you have from abandonia.com is in the serial blacklist in 2.6JRC4 version. As you suspect, you will have to get a new serial from Ron, then.

I have gotten a few race files in and I cannot open most of them as they are corrupt. Please note which version of Stars! you are playing, it needs to be 2.6JRC4.

Also, there is a bug in the race wizard whereby, after you create your race, you then change it's name (I think it happens when the name is different to the original name by more than 1 letter). If that's the reason then you will be unable to load your race file in your own copy of Stars so it's a good idea to reload the race file after you've saved your final version to ensure it's OK.

See this thread for details.

I guess, mine's also corrupt because of my version issue. I've sent my donation to receive a proper serial for JRC4 from Ron. Once I've got it, I'll generate a new racefile and send it.

The rename bug is presumably not the reason why, since I can't remember having changed anything there after first typing it.

I used the german 2.7j RC3 Version. But If I use 2.6j RC4 I do not have any Problems with the Racefile.
So if you have any problems with my Racefile please tell me and i will rebuild it in 2.6j RC4.

2.7JRC3 English does not cause any problems with Autohost, so I don't see why 2.7JRC3 German should cause any problems with Autohost.

The only situation I can think of where 2.7JRC3 would accept a file while 2.6JRC4 would not is if the serial number is on the blacklist in 2.6JRC4 but not on the blacklist in 2.7JRC3, but if that is the case, then I think 2.6JRC4 would give an error message when the serial number is entered. I don't know for certain, though, I don't have a blacklisted serial number to test it with Laughing

Was my race file corrupted? I can open it myself in 2.70j. I think it's RC3 - the patch notes list differences from RC2. Confused

Here is where we stand so far:

flamencowizard – No racefile received
nasobema - Racefile received ok
Stakmandoo – No Racefile received
CrazyBS – dropped
Azrael - Racefile received ok
Egooo - Racefile received ok
dracul104 - Racefile received ok
magic9mushroom – Racefile received ok
LittleEddie - Racefile received ok
fat_rhino - Racefile received ok
Nmid – Received racefile, need pwd
Traceroute (showed interest as alternate) – No racefile received

I still need racefiles for flamencowizard and Stakmandoo. Traceroute, if you are interested in playing, send me a racefile as well. If flamencowizard or Stakmandoo don't send me a racefile, you are in.

Thanks,
David

No, he didn't post in the thread. But he did send me an email letting me know he wanted to play and when CrazyBS dropped, I put him on the list so we would have the same amount of players.
