Some of you may remember the games The Wheel of Life I, II and III some years ago (the last of them ended in August 2003). I had really only intended to start one game at that time, but I received rather more than the necessary number of players, so I decided to set up two more games with the same setup and rules.

In short, it is a game for 4 teams of two in a remapped universe, and one of the few games that allows TT CA races without any race restrictions - Except that there can only be one CA on each team.

The full rules can be found here: http://craebild.dk/wol.html.

I will be playing host, and I already have a teammate, so there are 6 slots left for The Wheel of Life IV. If things go like they did last time, the might well be a game V and VI, too, but I will be non-playing host in those games, then.

Players can either apply as single players or as teams. If you apply as a single player you will be teamed up with the next single player who applies, but teams are preferred, so once there are 8 teams (my team included), then any single players are out, even if they applied before the last team - But if two single players have applied then they count as a team, of course.

The game will probably start in January or February, as the teams will have to agree on races and strategy, and the third party will have to set up the game. There will of course be breaks for holidays, this is not game that will be over in a few months.

The current list of players is:

craebild (team 1)
rolfverberg (team 1)
Dashiva (single player, needs a teammate, is at GMT+2 or GMT+3)
bretter (single player, needs a teammate, is at GMT-6)
jagophile (team 3)
Scorpius (team 3)
owteufel (single player, needs a teammate, is at GMT+1)

As I am playing host, I will need a third part to do the race checking, remapping, homeworld moving, 50 year forced gen and check for wayward comets. I can supply the necessary utilities, batch files, game.def file and instructions to do the job, though at least one of the batch files will have to be edited by the third party, as I obviously should not know the passwords for the races of the other teams.

The third party might also be called to judge any disputes between players, but there was no need for that in The Wheel of Life I, and I did not have to make any judgement calls in The Wheel of Life II or III.

Any comers for that third party position ?

I'd volonteer to be a third-party if you didn't found somebody yet. Cool

I haven't found a third party yet, so you are in.

I will get the necessary information to you, but there really isn't much for you to do until all the player slots have been filled.

I would like to play as well. If Dashiva will have me as a team member, that is good for me.

Welcome to the game.

You can PM Dashiva about teaming up, but Dashiva is 9 hours ahead of you in time zone, that could slow down communication.

On the other hand, I have had an ally living in Tasmania, that was a time difference of 10-12 hours depending on who had daylight savings time.

Good point on time zone difference. Perhaps we should see who joins and then work out teams to best manage communications.

Hi there,

This sounds like a fun game idea, myself and Scorpius would like to join as a team if there's still room...

We've both been playing stars amongst friends away from Autohost for a few years now, so I think we're both intermediate players, not complete newbies.

Cheers,
Jagophile

Welcome to the game both of you.

There is still room, in fact there are now two vacant slots left, if Dashiva and bretter teams up, or if the two last players each team up with one of them for better time zone match.

I will post some additional instructions later this evening (my time).

Welcome to the game, Scorpius.

Now you and jagophile just have to set up two races designed to work together, taking the special conditions of this game into account.

The most important special conditions are of course:

1. This is a team game, so you have an "ally" who cannot backstab you or end the alliance in any way.

2. This is a remapped universe, so the stars are not distributed the way they usually are.

3. There is a 50 year "jump start", so in 2400, you have to give orders for the next 50 years.

Hint for all players:
I mentioned on the rules page that PP are a bad idea. So are AR, as you will see if you test how an AR fares through the 50 year "jump start".

It seems this game will soon be full, so here are a few further instructions:

Once you are on a team, start coordinating race design and strategy with your teammate, as described in my reply to Scorpius above.

Once you have your races ready, you will need to send your password protected race files to XyliGUN who will be doing the remapping and game setup, along with your password and e-mail address. Either XyliGUN or I will post his e-mail address in this thread later.

You will also need to send me certain information:

Player name (preferably your HWF ID)
Displayed player name on game page (preferably your HWF ID)
e-mail address
Race name (plural)
Team name
Race filename
Where in the world you live (need not be exact, if the country does not stretch across several timezones then the country will be enough)
Timezone
DO NOT SEND YOUR RACE PASSWORD TO ME AS I AM PLAYING IN THIS GAME, TOO.

I will need some of that information in order to create the batch files, game.def file and Autohost game slot application, but team name, location and timezone are not strictly necessary.

You can send e-mails related to this game to woliv[AT]craebild[DOT]dk (make the necessary substitutions yourself) - That is a (temporary) e-mail address I have set up specific for this game. You can also send e-mails to any of my other active e-mail addresses, if you include either "Wheel of Life IV" or "WoL IV" in the subject line, then they will automatically be moved to the correct folder at my end.

There is not (as yet) any deadline for when you need to have your race files ready, but please do not take too long.

When the game is on Autohost, there will also be a game forum on HWF.

You are welcome to join.

Now, if the last player to join is also a single player and isn't too far from bretter in terms of timezone, that will make team matching easy.

If, on the other hand, the next to want in are already a team, then one of you three will have to go. According to the rules, that would be you, owteufel, but I will leave that up to the three of you. You and Dashiva are a lot closer to each other in timezone than either of you are to bretter.

We will see what happens.

What brettan is saying is that if the next to ask to join are two players who ask to join as a team, then he will bow out.

It is a lot easier to arrange coordination when the players are only 1 or 2 timezones apart than if the two players are 8 or 9 timezones apart.

As I wrote earlier, we will see what happens. For all we know, the last player asking to join might be a single player living in the same town as brettan - Similar coincidences have happened.

Bump...

The game needs only one more player to start, or two players who join as a team.

If only one player joins, then that player will be teamed with one of the single players on the list at the start of this thread.

If two players join as a team, then bretter has volunteered to drop out, as that makes most sense in terms of timezones. bretter might then choose to play in The Wheel of Life V (see below).

While there has not been as strong an interest as there was in The Wheel of Life I (technically just named The Wheel of Life), I will still announce The Wheel of Life V once The Wheel of Life IV is up and running. The only difference between The Wheel of Life IV and the The Wheel of Life V will be that in The Wheel of Life V I will be non-playing host and set up the game myself (remapping and moving homeworlds), while in The Wheel of Life IV, I am a playing host, so the setup (remapping and moving homeworlds) is done by a third party.

Does anyone want to play ?

It is usually considered cheating to play two races in the same game, except for short term handling of an ally or teammate's race if RL events prevent the ally or teammate from submitting turns.

I think Mick means he wants to play both in The Wheel of Life V and in The Wheel of Life IV ...

As for considering it "cheating" when one player playing both races of the same team, that's up to the host (you). In a game hosted by Alter Ego it was announced the other way around, both races were played by one player (Schizophrenia was the name of the game), he allowed me to play with a teammate instead of solo. Just saying if the host allows it, it's not cheating.

There is of course nothing to prevent Mick from playing in both The Wheel of Life IV and The Wheel of life V, but he might find himself in the endgame phase of both games at the same time, which could soak up a lot of time for doing the turns for both games.

I did write "usually considered cheating", I have seen games where each player was supposed to play two or more races, and in a recent game announcement it was noted that an ally or teammate could not take over turns for even one or two turns for a temporarily absent player, so if the game host says otherwise, then the rules are of course different.

I was just saying what could be expected to be the case if nothing else had been said (and incidentially how I would rule it in The Wheel of Life games).

Hi,
I have a couple of quick questions about the game.
1. We have the 50yr gen and we set build/research orders and scouting orders. Are we going to get the .m files for each year in order to build our own history file? If not do we get any information from scouting done?
2. Are we playing with random events? I've done a couple of test-beds and it's not inconceivable that someone could get the mystery trader in the second turn (after 2450). Given that we'll all have fairly small resource counts at the time, the tech provided could be equivalent to more than a decades research! That's a huge head-start to give someone!
