Hi all,

I will switch to Windows 7 (professional edition) on my main PC soon. I just don't know yet if I can safely use the 64 Bit variant or if I have to stick to the 32 Bit variant because of incompatibilities.
I am sure there are some experts around Smile
I will use it for work (office and developing), a game now and then (mostly adventures, but also newer action adventures and UT2004 now and then) and, of course, stars!. Which is my main concern. Will it run in XP mode even on the 64 Bit version?

Any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Andreas / wizard

I'm no pro but my comp had 64 bit for a week and then I took it off because it was total garbage. The only differences you actually see are the negative problems. Incompatibilities ect..
The only benefit to me is if your doing an experiment lol.
You know where I stand.

The primary advantage of 64bit is the size of the addressable memory. With 32bit you're limited to ~3.2GB of ram. You can put more in but it won't get used.

I'm not sure if you run XP mode as 32bit with a 64bit host, but you could certainly run a 32bit virtual PC - both MS and Sun have free versions that can run an XP client. You could even run a linux client if you wanted to.

Hi Wizard,

I just ran into the problem you're describing. Installed Win7 x64 and now I can't run stars. I'm going down the virtual route with a x86 XP machine, which is a decent solution.

If you think you might run games/applications that could make use of more than 3GB of RAM, then I still think 64 bit is worth it. Depends on how willing you are to work around the problems I guess Smile

On the other hand, if you're not going to be using more than 3GB of ram then don't bother Wink

I have bought the 32 bit version now, and it's running smoothly (except that I still have to solve the problem that windows won't start without the windows dvd in the drive). I haven't tried stars! yet though.

Thanks for your advice,

Andreas

Fresh install (upgrade not possible from Windows XP, I will try later this year on my laptop with Vista), but the old windows was still on the HD. next time, I'll format the partition before. Though, migrating data was very easy with this setting. All in all, Windows 7 is much more intuitive and usable than Vista or XP. I am very content up to now.

Hi. I have just verified that you can run Stas! on the desktop of a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installation using XP Mode of the Windows Virtual PC (which is free although the XP Mode is big download). Kinda weird to set it up and you have to rememeber that its actually running on the Windows XP VM but it works.

Excellent. Currently I have a xp virtual machine setup on my vista 64 box but now that won't be necessary...

I recently upgraded to a new PC and 64bit Windows7 Pro.

Not sure about the 32bit version of Windows7, but Stars "should" work just fine on that, unless they removed the support for 16 bit apps like they did in the 64bit version.

On Windows7 Pro, you can download the XP mode (from microsoft), which is essentially running a XP guest VM on Windows7. You can copy all your stars files over to the XP VM, and everything works just fine. You do not have that option on the window7 home version.

Otherwise, there are other options available, like vitual box. However, it was a little buggy a while ago, which is why I went with the MS solution...They have probably fixed the issues by now.

Thanks Matt.
The player affected couldn't get the Virtual Machine to run on his Win 7 home version. Mad
He has decided to drop out, so we are now looking for a replacement player for the HALO game (see extra post in the bar).

Funger, tell the player to get Oracle Virtual Box and install WinXP. Surely he has an old WinXP cd from a previous computer!

Hi, the virtual box seem to be not the problem, but the fact that the Win XP can not be installed in the virtual box from the Win XP recovery CD of the previous (now broken) labtop...

Does that mean one has to buy a new version of XP to run it on the Virtual machine ?

If it is a recovery CD that came with the laptop, then it is an OEM version that will only run on computers from that company - And possibly only on laptops of the same model.

It seems he is out of luck there Crying or Very Sad

Perhaps installing an old Win98, Win95 or even Win3.11 would be easier? Stars! should run happily enough under any of these too. Cool
