Hi !

I needed some advice on .h file trading...

I have this fascination for knowing as much as possible about my surroundings and my neighbours, so I'm quite keen to trade .h files.

When I send my .h file, I plan on deleting my fact/mine/resources/mining rates information for my planets. Do you think that's enough to keep my privacy, or is .h file trading not worth it?

My thinking is that people will find out about you 20 years down the line anyways... even if you disclose your homeworld location in year 10 and have a decent defence to stop WM attacks that try to stop your growth in the starting 15 years, I dont see how it could come back to bite me.

However, I just needed to clarify, how do I show the actual temp/grav/radiation settings of the planet, instead of the hab% settings for my race?
I've been told it's the setting newreports=1 in the stars.ini, but I'm using vista and I dont think it's accepting any changes I'm making in my stars.ini in my user folder Sad

Any advice would be appreciated.

You can't trade your .h file. You can only see what is in the .h file when you open the corresponding .m file ... so you would need to share that as well. Not a good idea unless you trust the other player completely.

In order to share the the data in the .h file you'll indeed need to dump it into a .p# file, not a .pla file. (In the menu Report > Dump to Text File > Planet Information.)

The difference between these two is that the .p# file (where # is player number) holds more data. And you get a .p# file if you can edit that setting in your stars.ini (if you can't check your permissions, if it's your own pc you should have an admin account). (If you really can't export a .p# file, send me your .m and .h file and I'll do it for you.)

Trading .p files can be nice (especially to find inhabitable planets in area's that you haven't scouted yet) but be careful of what you give away. You could indeed strip out your levels of pop/minerals/factory/...

The .p files can be opened in exel to edit (strip data) or any of the utilities listed here:

Sharing info is a nice diplomatic tool as well as mostly necessary in Alliances or Team games. Very Happy

Strip *everything* but the name of your own planets. It should be enough that your partners know that these are yours. Rolling Eyes

And yes, the .p# files dumped with newreports=1 carry the raw hab info for each scouted planet, so you can safely use Excel (or other handy tools) to strip the "value" and the "terra" columns. Deal

So many Stars, so few Missiles!

In space no one can hear you scheme! Deal

Thanks micha and m.a.
The problem I'm facing is that vista is misbehaving with me !!
It doesnt recognise my additional commands I'm adding to my stars.ini file in my user folder (its not the system folder like in XP).

In the [misc] section, both my defaultpassword option / backups=51 / newsreports=1 are being ignored...

Any suggestions?

Regards,
IronHair.

It should be in the "c:\windows" folder ...
The additional commands indeed won't be recognized because Stars! doesn't use the .ini file in the user folder.

found the location of the stars.ini file in vista...
It's neither the user folder as I thought, nor the windows folder (like in XP).
C:\Users\**********\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows
I wasnt searching all the system folders earlier.
That solves the stars.ini problem.

Now to see if I can add other player's .h data directly into my stars game...

Had a quick search on the net and it seems that's indeed how vista handles older programs that require write access but are not allowed to. Those programs are fooled by the VirtualStore ...
I guess since I'm admin of all my pc's Stars! is allowed to put the stars.ini in the windows folder ...

Good luck with that. Wink There is (at present) no util that can do that for you. It's on the top of my wish list for all the +10 years that I'm playing this great game.
