Jmattax recently simplified the formula for mass damage from over gating in the Guts of overgating article which I'm all for...and as stated he's mathematically correct. However the formula is attributed to Steven Posey and I find it difficult to believe he wouldn't have not simplified it himself without some good reason.

Doesn't anyone know such a reason?
Is the formula incorrect?

Before simplifying:
MassDamage%=100%*(1-((5*maxSmass-mass)/(5*maxSmass-maxSmass) *(5*maxRmass-mass)/(5*maxRmass-maxRmass)))
After simplifying:
MassDamage%=100%*(1-((5*maxSmass-mass)/(4*maxSmass) *(5*maxRmass-mass)/(4*maxRmass)))

where: maxSmass is the mass limit of the Sending gate. maxRmass is the mass limit of the Receiving gate.

Well I have just had quick look over and I can not think of a reason why they should not be the same.

I know, not the answer you wanted.

Probably just because it looked easier to read & understand. Or perhaps just to save a couple multiplies. Sherlock

Either it's a typo, in which case both formulas (being equivalent) are incorrect... Or perhaps he deliberately left it unsimplified out of a feeling that it made it more obvious how the formula was invented.

Either way, the formula is wrong. It's missing some logic to prevent someone getting tricked into thinking this ship won't take any damage, for example:
145kt from a 100/250 to a 300/500

Obviously it ought to look something more like:

MassDamage% = 100% * ( 1 - max((5*maxSmass-mass)/(4*maxSmass), 1) * max((5*maxRmass-mass)/(4*maxRmass), 1) )

I don't have any data sets to know how accurate that is.

Does anyone have any comprehensive datasets, or can generate them? Sherlock
