Stars! hangs computer for 10~15 secs when quitting? |

Hi, I've noticed that since I've got into Stars! again, that after I've done my turn and close it down, my computer hangs for up to 15 seconds.
Rather strange. I understand that Windows 2000 uses some sort of Windows 3.1 emulation - could that be causing this hang on my computer?
Nothing serious, just curious.

It's a 'direct install' although that just means I unzipped the 2.6j file into a directory, bought a serial from Tuomas, then started playing.
I'm playing it on a Celeron 400 w/ 192MB RAM. Whether I'm running a bunch of programs or none, it still hangs my computer briefly.
Hmm, quite puzzling.

Actually it doesn't 'hang' the computer, if I have mp3s playing in the background, they'll play happily away, and I have limited scrolling control in my browser. But anything that might require a.. disk access? (like page file?) is frozen. Like looking at emails, going to another webpage, pressing the start button, restoring a minimised program, that sort of thing.
No, disk access is not the problem, my mp3s were still playing. I'm lost on this one.
It's quite trivial really, but I'm just curious if anyone else gets this running Stars on modern machines.

Hmm.. NTVDM and wowexec didn't have any noticable difference in activity when I was closing Stars! down.
A good intro to 16-bit application emulation on 32-bit windows:http://www.winnetmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleI D=3022&pg=1&show=1052
I had a quick look on google about NTVDM and wowexec, but I couldn't find any further information. Although something like this could be done if something sharing the same memory space as Stars! decided to hang briefly on exit, but there's only wowexec besides Stars! as part of NTVDM. And the Stars! process closes very quickly after exit.
Hmm, very curious.
Alex.

I haven't had time to grab Castle of the Winds, but the same hang happens when I open then close Stars! Help.
So I don't think it's a problem with Stars at all, really, it's a problem with my NTVDM...
Oh, and I don't have any sort of anti-virus on my computer. And I know what's on my computer quite well so it's not any sort of adverse program.
I find it odd that noone else has experienced the same problems with 16-bit windows programs...
Alex.

I've noticed one more thing - if I shut down the computer without closing Stars! first, it still hangs, but an End Now dialog comes up - the title for it is CiceroIDWndFrame or something. Does anyone know what this is?

Now to go all technical on you...all multitasking system's have "signals" programs can send to other programs. When you shut the computer down it sends a "quit" signal to all the programs running which are supposed to then quit in a timely fashion.(They might be also supposed to send an "I got the signal" signal back..not sure..I didn't get that far into it.) Either way...Stars does neither so the OS then asks you if it should stop it running in a more forcible way - ie just stop it running. This would prevent stars from doing its normal quit stuff(saving etc) which is why they have the quit signal and also why the system asks you first (you might want something starsy saved) - that asking you is the "end now dialog".
Clear as mud?

Clear as. Still, what is this CiceroWndFrame program? Has anyone heard of it before? It sounds like some sort of Visual Basic object or something.

You said it yourself CiceroWndFrame is the title of the End now dialog - its part of windows.

Sysinternals publish a few freeware products that might help if you havent found the cause and are still interested. The most helpful are probably regmon and filemon - registry monitor and file monitor respectively. Run them with nothing else open save Stars and switch them to log just before you close down Stars. You can see what the program is trying to do in terms of file and registry access. Might help. There's process monitors as well of course!
