Hi!
For some time now I've been looking for a game, suitable to field an AR, but now I gave up looking. Wink

I aim at quite vanilla game, up to 10 players, about 40 planets per player, dense or packed uni, normal tech speed, single victory game. About the only limitation I'd like to set, would be WRT player skill with an AR:

  1. All candidate players are required to submit to the neutral game host a game, where they got over 20k @ 2450 (AccBBC start, any dense/packed uni) with his/her AR race. If a candidate is unable to achieve that, he's not welcome.
  2. If you're an expert with an AR (multiple wins with AR), you're asked to limit yourself by leaving 80 RW points, spent to whatever you want. If you have just one or two victories, leave 65 RW points. If you've played quite some games with AR, but never won one, leave 50 points. No one would check that Thumbs Up , but you could brag about that when the game would be over Wink
Desired turn schedule: 5-7 turns per week to about turn 30, thereafter any player could request a slow-down to 3 turns/week. One break of 1 week for each player. Player consensus for longer breaks. Player missing 2 turns without notice would set game to hold, until replacement is found, or player consensus to continue.

Comments? Takers? Wink

I would have been interested was it not of rule #1.

I actually have no idea if I could succeed, I never ever tried to do something like that... And since I'm already in a game right now, I don't really have the time to work on it.

I guess it would all depend of when you think you would be hosting this game. I like challenges.

That's exactly the idea behind the rule - to level the playing field. In my early AR testbeds I've regularly hit 17k @ 2450. Now I regularly hit 25k+, with virtually the same race.

Well, there was Octahedron, both your neighbours were asured to be your friends (keeping your closest neighbours alive gave victory points). I think of 8 races 4 were AR ... and game was won by one. Smile

I'm a bit interested though currently in a time consuming game (but aren't they all Laughing I just love MM too much) and all the same PRT is a bit without surprises ...

Do you think I should allow (semi)-m races? Mine settings for them 5/10/x - any number of mines, but worst eff and max price?

Mineless... Might as well just be banning them, they'd get outmined by the AR's from the *start*.

If you wanted a gentle softening of the other PRTs, you could just force +ARM and -OBRM on all non AR races, and let them decide how to play. Or a lesser penalty on mines, like forcing cost 5 or 6, without forcing efficiency down, in combination with disallowing -f races (lesser mines encourages -f usually, which is the opposite to what you want)

I would be interested in such a game if it didn't include non-AR races and didn't start for at least a few weeks.

Having it all AR races simplifies things somewhat - no worries about packet attacks, clearing off planetary populations, and similar little details involving the 'normals'. That is one of the things that attracts me to this game since it would be a second game for me. Really third, but the first is far enough along that by the time TOPEKA and this game got busy it would be over.

Splendid!

If it starts as late as June and will be in a small or at most medium universe, I'd join. I know this might be 1 or even 2 too many conditions...

Excellent.
Having never played AR this is exactly the right thing to do and test when not having the time to play a real game at the moment. Thanks for the nixe idea and challenge.

Umm, that's not in intended rules, but may happen if players wote for it.

Well, WRT the big number of interested players Wink , the game will not start soon, but I'm still interested.

The game will likely be in small uni. For 4 players it will be small dense, for 6 small packed. If 7 or 8 players apply, I will probably ask someone to "shrink" the normal medium uni to size 900*900 to keep the desired density.

I might be interested in this if I qualify.

The only AR I've played to it's conclusion achieved only 14k by 2450 (med/norm/AccBBS/6 players/IIRC other races were 2xIS, 2xSS, 1xWM). However I did have 72k by 2500 & won the game.

Density of stars in normal uni is almost halved vs. the packed one. Do a testbed in packed and you'll see significantly better performance.

Hi ,

I am interrested in joining the game but I am a Rookie at AR.

I have some Questions about the Testbed:

You wrote:

What size ?
And any Dense make a real different ?
So a AR in a packed universe reaching 20k will not reach it in a dense game .

When do you think the game will start ?
What are the plans for generation time ? I am short in time and already in one game now so I dont think I could handle a 24houre game.

Basicaly, ANYTHING will do, if you manage to get over 20k @ 2450. But if you do it in a normal density uni, you're required to leave 100 RW points. Wink
WRT testbed - I've been tempted to request 100 Arm BBs before turn 7x, but ... well... I'd like to have a target or two. Twisted Evil

Since interest is climbing up (you're the 5th), likely in the beginning of the June (6th month).

Please check my OP. IMO it's quite player-friendly.

And for all AR beginners: I'd suggest you to check the AR section for ideas.

I think I have time for this.

Have a testbed of 35K OBRM AR in small packed uni. Max minerals and random events NOT checked. Let me know who to send to for qualification.

Obviously, would not want to use an OBRM AR in a real game.

Have played AR in two unofficial duels. Won one, lost one. Never played AR in larger game.

Also, won a dueling championship with mostly IS race.

What do you think is reasonable for race wizard penalty in this case?

Arrgh, I needed the very year 50 to just reach 20k res:
small, packed, AccBBS, 8 expert AIs
And en16-weap12-con13 at year 50 isn't too great, either, especially when taking into account that I haven't produced a single BB.

O hell, I'll get creamed.

Nevertheless I am amazed how ARs start to fly when Ultras are massproduced.

I'd like to join. AR has always been a favorite for me so I'll see if I can run a quick testbed to see if I still got it Smile

If anyone needs AR specific guides I've got 2 on my site http://www.groep7.co.za/stars/Walkthroughs.htm Smile I might just have to go over them myself again since I'm a bit rusty Rolling Eyes

EDIT: Fixing the 2 AR links and the testbed link on my site. will have to fin the other giudes for the rest Embarassed

Heck, that's selfexplanatory. If I can't get 20k at y50 vs stupid AIs I should shoot myself... I thought. Hey, I survived, barely.Quite underestimated the pest those Robotoid HEs are for an AR, no cheap tech-provider at all but stealing planets and spawning like rabbits. Even worse, never thought I'd say this, those IS and SS-AIs with all their beta-torp-DDs.

Usually testing vs AIs is almost like cheating since they rather tend to provide tech and minerals instead of a challenge but when playing an AR they do their job and slow you down. I can recommend testing an AR-design vs a full mix of expert-AIs.

ARs are my favourite prey, true enough but that makes it even more creepy playing an AR, being prey myself.

Playing AR in a MP-game? Am I crazy? Usually I play in small universes. Of course, I haven't played AR, either.

So, if the game will start in June and not in May, count me in.

I've passed the res & BB tests so I'm in!

What penalty do I need to take?

I've completed only one AR game but I did win it so that seems to mean 65RW but IMO that's a bit harsh since I think I was a bit lucky - Joseph played a SS -f & should have attacked while I had no minerals but another neighbour distracted him until it was too late.

Why don't you post the new game? I haven't played this year & I'm keen for a game. Having said that I wouldn't want to leave the AR noobies short of testing time.

Please remember: "No one would check that". It's intended as another act of leveling the playing field. If a player thinks he's good with AR, he should leave more points.

I've played in only one AR game, that lasted ~30 tuns and ended because of too many drop-outs, but I'll still take the 50 RW points "penality".

So if you feel 65 RW points is too big for your experience, simply take one you feel is right for you.

Fair enough.

I've decided that 33RW seems about right given that, as I said, I've only completed one AR game (I've played about 8 games in all)

I'd like to propose that this game is regenned if starting Iron MC is lower that (say) 70. There are 2 reasons:
1. Inexperienced ARs may not realise how serious the early Iron crunch can be so I think that should not be TOO serious for them.
2. Experienced players that take a RW penalty will actually be in a better position IRT mineral shortages since they will almost certainly apply the points to surface minerals or MCs. A higher starting Iron MC should reduce that advantage (eg. an advantage of 1100 v 1000Kt is less serious compared to 600 v 500Kt)

BTW I've noticed that surface minerals distributions from left over RW points are approx.: I/B/G = 25%/25%/50% regardless of MCs.
