Hi!
AFAIK Win7 discontinued support for win-16 apps. However if your processor supports virtualization, you can for free download from MS the "virtual XP comp" (490 Mb file). Haven't tested Stars! at home on my W7-64 with virtualXP installed (I play Stars! on a portable on 1600x1000 resolution), but can do this evening.
The tool that test support for virtualization: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=163321
Virtual PC: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/

Is this just an issue with 64 bit operating systems? I have windows 7 but 32 bit and Stars! works fine but I do want to upgrade to the 64 bit version when I have some monies.

johng316 wrote on Mon, 18 January 2010 14:10 | So far, so good! Thanks to the instructions here, I was able to reconfigure the bios to enable virtualization.
However, it seems I have discovered a new limitation. To run Virtual XP environment, you must have at least Windows 7 Professional. Windows 7 Home Premium 64 is what I have, and Microsoft wants $89 for the upgrade fee.
So for those of you puzzling over this, keep in mind that if you have Home Premium, you'll need to upgrade to Professional (unless there is a work-around someone smarter than I am can recommend).
I'm now trying to find a less costly path.

Its worse than you think...you also have to have a CPU that supports virtualisation, and not all do (or will).
If you're stuck without those, a simple VM using VMware or Virtual PC running any lesser version of windows or even linux will run Stars! just fine, albient the client OS may be a lot sluggish...you should be able to very drammatically strip it down tho...a lost of XP's processing overhead(services) can be removed if you never use it for the internet.

Yep, Stars works fine in 'XP Mode'
As mentioned, if you don't have the Pro/Ultimate edition, you can still using Virtual PC (or any other virtualisation software,) it just doesn't integrate as nicely as 'XP Mode' does.
One handy comment about 'XP Mode'... When you've got that set up, copy your stars install in... Then make a shortcut to the Stars! exe in the Start Menu (in the XP VM.) Also make sure .m1 through .m16 and .hst files are all associated with Stars (in the XP VM.) If you do this, then (after some delay) these files will become associated with XP Mode in the Win 7 host operating system, at which point you can pretty much forget the VM exists, as double clicking Stars files will fire up Stars directly from Win7. It's quite nice, I like this approach they've taken (better than the mess they were making trying to support everything forever...) I think you'll still need to fire up the VM directly if you want to mess around with stuff like batch files launching Stars, etc.

Dogthinkers, what specifically did you have to do to get the file associations to transfer all the way through the virtual machine? I have put a Stars shortcut on the XP desktop, in the XP start menu permanent list, and in the All Programs, and my Stars file associations are not propagating through to Win7.
