Hi guys .. fresh meat here
I played Stars many years ago and btw that was the killerapp force me to upgrade W3.11 to W95 (game crashes when i had few hundreds of ships). Some time passed and now, there are many improvements and I wanted to try them.
So I dn 2.7jrc3 and start playing. Well, crash after few rounds. No error message, no log, no nothing. I can't run the game again. Trying to kill some hidden service or find some kind of opened file, but only working thing was restart. I found this old thread: http://starsautohost.org/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th=187 8&rid=&S=a933774a37668f914671c6a55e018642&pl_vie w=&start=0#msg_15734 which gives me some ideas. Win16 subsystem was maybe what i want to try to fix. I found patched dll, which should fix crashing, but i wasn't be able to install it ... dll is protected by system and when i tried that to fix (even from other OS), system allways delete new version and use original. Well, another step .. no sounds? That sounds good, but it didn't work. Last chance - safe mode ... and miracle happened ... i played about 6 hours without crash. Well then I restarted to normal mode and again, no problems .. WTF?
But I noticed another problem. When I started advanced game (no problem with normal) I can set any race to myself, but I allways get fully randomized race with predefined name. What I can do with that?

The randomized race bug is a known bug, that is the result of saving the race under another name (usually a shorter name).
The solution to that is to write down the desired race settings on paper (or in a .txt file in Notepad or similar), and then recreate the race from scratch with the intended name.
The other problem looks stranger, but I might ask, which version of Microsoft .NET framework do you have installed, and which version of Visual Express (if any) ?
You also mention trying to install .dll files using another OS, which other OS is that ?
I am running Stars! 2.7JRC3 in WinXP Pro SP3 32 bit without any problems, so there must be some difference between our setups if you have problems.
One suggestion for you is to download and use Stars! 2.6JRC4 and try using that. The only difference between 2.7JRC3 and 2.6JRC4 is that 2.6JRC4 does not support sound effects in the battle board, and 2.6JRC4 has some functions for automated script running used by Autohost (unnecessary at client side). You could also try to use 2.6JRC3, the only difference between 2.6JRC3 and 2.7JRC3 is the fact that 2.6JRC3 does not support the sound effects in the battle board.

Thanks for reply ... well, just now i have noticed that when i close game, i can't run it again (restart needed) ... again, no error.
Installed dll was wow32.dll into system32 and dllcache, but it is protected dll which OS watching and if any change appears, restores dll from backup. I wasn't able to change it so I'm using original. Dll is for win16 subsystem which has problem with addressing some kind of resources (probably with sound and maybe graphics). I found repaired (hacked) dll, where 14bites addressing limit is increased to 16bit what should fix problems (at least for other apps it works as page said).
Well .. probably main problem should be my OS installation. It is more than 6 years old, survives 2 mainboards changes and many games and other apps, registry file has over 300MB :/. .NET is 3.5SP1 and Visual Express I don't see, but there is something ... MS WSE 3.0 runtime (:/).
I'll try different versions tommorow and left a message. Thanks again.

when Stars crashes under Windows XP, and you can't restart the game... End process on 'wowexec' (close any other 16 bit programs you have open first.) This should let you open Stars again, just as if you'd restarted the OS.
This won't help you stop Stars crashing, but at least it'll be less of a hassle when it does...
