Hi,
I played a demo of Stars years ago and have obtained the full version recently - I am looking to learn the in's and out's and eventually get some games going!
I live in the South East of England and I have too much time on my hands...
Can somebody explain what the serial number is for-it is not entirely clear to me.. I don't think I have it, obv dont mind donating and getting one - does it allow me to be part of the autohost system?
I understand the full version is freely available, is there some way I can tell if my version is correct or are there some patches I will require?
Thanks guys...

Welcome
As far as I remember, please let someone correct me if I am wrong, the difference between demo and full version is for instance that using demo you cannot create your own race and also techs availables are limited only up to level 10.
Serial number is needed to play full version of stars! and it is required to give it only once while opening stars! for the first time on given computer (as a rule, there are exceptions). Simply, Stars! will ask you to give serial number at the beginning, and it is done only once. If you do not have serial number, ask Ron Miller (SAH administrator) for it.
The up to date patche is stars27jrc3 - it is required to play at SAH. (you can find it here -> http://starsautohost.org/kn2050.htm )

To be precise, there are 2 patches you can use playing at SAH. The above mentioned stars27jrc3 and stars26jrc4 can also be used - both are usable, unless you want to host. To set up the game, hosts are required to use JRC4, AFAIK.
I hope this is correct, I have very bad memory

What you're thinking of is the difference between 2.6jrc3 (no sound) and 2.7jrc3 (crappy sound). Both 2.6 and 2.7 are identical in every other respect and mutually compatible.

The serial code is used to differentiate between Stars! "installs" on different computers (in the same game). It does allow you to be part of the Autohost system in as much as Autohost uses the latest "registered shareware" version (2.6jRC4) and does not allow players to use trial versions.

If you open the "registered shareware" (2.6*) or retail(2.7*) versions it should ask you for a serial code the first time you open Stars! - and again every time you open Stars! until you save a game.

AFAIK the difference between JRC3 and JRC4 is that JRC4 contains some functionality used for the operation of Stars! AutoHost, and it should not make any difference which of the two you use unless you want to set up a second automated host server like Stars! AutoHost. There doesn't seem to be any need for a second automated host at this time.
A game generated in JRC3 will run on Stars! AutoHost - My "Wheel of Life" games were generated in JRC3, and they worked just fine on Stars! AutoHost.
