Hello, sportsfans!

You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family. Until now. Now you can't pick your friends either! Very Happy

Game: Capture the Flag
Version: JRC4, played on Autohost
Turn frequency: 48 hour maximum to start, 72 hours with 75% of players requesting change.
# of Players: 8-16 (even number required)
Skill Level: Any (prefer intermediate or above)
Universe Size: Medium, Dense
Starting Positions: Distant
Special Conditions: AccBBS, No Random Events
Special Rules: Capture the Flag is a team game. You do not have the luxury of picking your teammates - you are stuck with whoever is in your corner geographically. After the game is generated an imaginary diagonal line will be drawn from the northeast corner of the map to the southwest corner. Your team consists of whoever is on the same side of the line as you are. In the unlikely event that a player's HW is on the line, he goes to whichever side has fewer players. In the event that an IT or PP has worlds on either side of the line, the location of the primary HW determines which team you are on.

The goal is simple. Whatever worlds are respectively in the southeast-most and northwest-most corners are the flags. As teams, you must defend these worlds. Your goal is to capture your opponents' flag world and hold it, with population on it, for five years while defending your own flag world. Team play is a must in this game. If you don't play well with others, don't bother joining this one.

I am playing, so password your race files. Send them to me at bigEDog at prodigy dot net. Put "Capture the Flag" in the subject line. Once the game begins, all players on a team will be expected to change their passwords to the same word so anyone can take over for a player who drops out.

If you have questions, I will answer them here or via email.

Good luck!

Sounds like fun to me! Count me in. My race file is on its way!

One question. Can the teams colonize the "flags" they are defending to make it tougher for opponents to capture them?

Have you thought about requesting no public forum, but two private forums for this game? So that only the players on each team can read their forum. Nod I think it'd make communication a lot easier and more persistent. Thumbs Up

I suppose all cross-border communication would be in-game. I mean, what would you say to the bad guys, "Your breath smells! You make me wanna Puke2 "?

Looking forward to this one! Bounce

Now that sounds like an excellent idea to me.

I too am looking forward to a good game. I'm anxious to see how my team lines up.

How many players so far?
Any estimate on a start date?

Thanks,
Dan

This sounds like a lot of fun.

How will people find out who is on which team? Will all players be required to say what side of the line they are on at the start or will they just have to find out as the explore.

I'll play. I feel hollow inside without a game... I think I can handle the MM..

However, can we play in a Small instead? A medium just seems a bit too large and too easy to get bogged down in.

I would definately like to play this game since it sounds like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I'm playing all the games I can handle right now. Perhaps if this game goes well there can be a Capture the Flag 2?

Howdy!

So far we have the following players for Capture the Flag:

1. EDog (race undecided - I'll throw something together at the last minute like I always do...)
2. Luke (Soviet)
3. Mick (Dwarf)
4. Alex (Naphta)
5. Chee (Angst3)
6. Paladin (Flag2a)
7. Shadallark (Olves)

I need at least one more player and would accept up to nine more. We will establish two private forums after the game begins to allow for a central strategy-planning location for each team. Get those race files in, ya mooks!

Everyone should declare what side of the line they are on with an in-game message the first turn so teams will be established right away.

With 8 players, a small would be okay, I suppose. With 16, a medium would give teams enough room to build themselves up some. I'll make a final determination based upon how many race files I have.

Huh?? Instead of the game host (or 3rd party) dividing up everyone into 2 equal teams, you're going to let everyone just declare which side they're on? Wouldn't that lead to unbalanced teams, or a situation where some players might agree with each other to play as a team in advance?

I believe the unbalanced teams is an accepted risk. But I agree about the 3rd party. Less so much the pre-game alliance "cheaters" (they would be found out in due course anyway) than the players who lie on the diagonal and would have to reveal that fact before finding out which side they were on.

Maybe the game should be submitted to a third party in order to move a HW or two if needed. If one team has 9 races and one has 7, or worse, it's a 10/6 split, it would be very hard to overcome IMHO.

Indeed - or all players can submit a planet dump to a third party who'll use x-borders or something to determine the diagonal.

If one team gets more space because of something like that, then that's really just the luck of the draw as far as I'm concerned. Makes the other team work all the harder.. Twisted Evil

Ok - I just did a quick test. I created 10 different universes and checked each HW in each universe to see how the teams balanced out. I ran 2 trials each for 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 player universes. All were in a medium, dense, and distant. There was ONE case (a fourteen player universe) where one team had more people than the other (8 to 6). And there was ONE case (a sixteen players universe) where there was one player situated directly on the border (making it easy to balance the teams - they just went to the team with fewer players).

Oh - with the universe divided into the Northwest and the Southeast it is really easy to determine which team you're on - if the X coordinate of your homeworld is greater than your Y coordinate, then you're on the Southeast team - if your Y coordinate is greater than your X, you're on the Northwest team.

Likewise - to determine the "Flag" planet - if it's not obvious - you can subtract the X coordinate from the Y coordinate, and the planet with the greatest difference will be the "Flag" planet in the Southeast - for the Northwest, subtract the Y from the X.

Based on that - I think we should be safe if there are 8-12 players playing. If you have more players than that - many of them will be tiptoeing along the border - and there is a greater chance that one team will have more people than the other - so we should probably use a third party checker.

Make sense?

Dan

My humble opinion is that we should not bother with remapping the universe, simply let the races fall where they may!

I am looking forward to this game. When were you thinking of starting it? I only ask because May 19 is a long weekend in many parts of Canada and I was wondering if we would be starting before or after that?

Re: everybody's posts concerning declaring teams

See Dan (chee) C's post about this. The random element should avoid any conflicts unless we have a large group of players. So far I have 9 racefiles submitted and several others have expressed interest. Is anyone interested/willing to check HW placements if the game swells that isn't going to play? (I had no idea this concept would be so well received!) As far as pregame alliances, I don't see how this is really possible, as there is a 50% chance you will be on opposite teams anyway.

My intention is to accept any straggler racefiles over the weekend, because we're all going to be too busy to start any new games, WHAT WITH IT BEING MOTHERS' DAY AND ALL!! CALL YOUR MOMS YA MOOKS!! By Wednesday (or thereabouts) I will close the game and submit files to Ron.

If it is just a matter of checking that players are evenly split by the dividing line or designating the nearest of the overstrength side to play for the other team, I could do that.

Just let me know.
