Despite its date of 2001 Sep 1, the help file (which lacks a table of contents) appears to be older, about the release of 3.0.

I really like the Stars! Calculator, even though some of its functions are a bit off. I've heard that the fuel usage isn't quite right. And the Battle Speed calculator is right off.

At least battle speed is easy to do in your head:

Battle Speed = Engine Battle Speed
- floor (Ship Mass / (#Engines x 70kt))/4
+ #MJ/4 + #OT/2 + (if WM ? 1/2 else 0)

Engine Battle Speed = (Optimum Speed - 2)/4

I've read your amazing fuel usage article, m.a. It's very good. What you must have done to reverse engineer that...or was it easier to disassemble the code and figure that out?!?

Contemplating the difficulty you faced there reminds me of tweaking formulas in my dual economy spreadsheet. It simulates one planet's growth and economies for 2 race settings and compares them. The model is nowhere near as complete as the Colony tab on Posey's spreadsheet, but it does allow me to quickly compare pairs of race settings over several years. A lot faster than a testbed or a test game, but not as certain.

Anyway, speaking of Posey's spreadsheet, I've found a few errors in the ship Buid Cost tab: Cruiser and Battle Cruiser Shield/Elect/Mech slots were set as Scanner/Elect/Mech; and Scanner weights were wrong. So I fixed them. And added stuff to calculate Fuel and Cargo numbers.

No reverse engineering at all. I had a couple idle afternoons and was able to devise an adecuate & easy testbed (hint: when hunting for low-percent deviations, large numbers are your friends ). The rest was just fiddling with integer math. Writing the article was the hard part.

Because of bots creating nonsense accounts excessively(over fourteen the other day), and until an email confirmation system is working (It hasn;t so far - ever ) and is shown to prevent this, you will need to contact Gible to register either by PM here at HWF or via email.

There is no criteria for registration beyond being sentient (non-life sentient being are ok )

This is a heads up that the wiki may be difficult or impossible to access for umm... a while...

in more detail...Yanni informed me last night that his hosting provider will no longer be providing a hosting service as of the end of the month, consequently the box on which the wiki is hosted will be rehomed. At this stage we're not sure when, where, how or if the wiki will be re- hosted/homed. I have made a complete backup of both the files and data and have disabled all article editing. New account creation remains disabled since the bot issue (which got worse - a few of the supposedly idle bot accounts started creating interesting pages so I blocked them all and then deleted their user records from the DB )

A pain in the ass to be sure, but not the first time and the wiki will be up and running again eventually. At least I have a backup this time

Edit: <strike>I am currently downloading/creating a static copy of the wiki which I will make available for download to tide ya'll over </strike> I decided this was a failure when I realised there were far too may copies of the main page and it started downloading stuff from Wikipedia.

Edit 2: Yanni has just informed me that it will probably be moved tomorrow and that its new IP address will be 210.54.120.32, so when it moves I will duly update the dns records and all going well, the impatient among you who are able to edit your hosts file may access Stars!wiki at its new home with that address. No need to panic after all. Where did I put my oxygen?

I wish I had more time to translate the French version. Last year I had a lot of free time around December, as my work is very seasonal. We however had a very strange year for 2009, and we worked more in the winter time than we did in the summer. And we are a company focusing on air conditionning...

I did start a new game though. Hopefully this will get me going.

Just a heads up that editing on all three wikis has been disabled pending its access ports being redirected to its new server.

As usual, a big round of thanks to Yanni for all his hosting... he refuses to tell me how much it costs.

I have rebuilt gible.net (and the wikis)...

• on thier own actually_virtual server running Ubunutu 9.10 (as opposed to the CentOS fake virtual server thingy it was on) ... no more Webmin
  it was/is currently on)
  
• using the latest Mediawiki software (1.15.1)
  
• not installed the extensions that weren't being used
  
• re-written the stars skin for 1.15.1 coincidentally fixing a bug where the sidebar appeared below the content area in Chrome since version 3... with Papabear's help I'm going to fiddle some more with prettying the logo area more too
  

If you really want to edit something before the ports are redirected you may access the new server by adding :2080 to the address eg http://wiki.gible.net:2080/index.php/Main_Page

Once the ports have been redirected the old server will be deleted.

There are quite a few hidden/not-linked-to things in both gible.net and wiki.gible.net that I haven't copied across, a backup does exist so if you use any of those things and find they're not available on the new server let me know and I'll copy them over.

Just FYI, full disclosure, yadda yadda, I added a Paypal donate button where the copyright license logo would normally go (since the wiki isn't even remotely covered by any reasonable copyright license). Not really expecting anything from the button, but the option is there if anyone wants to use it And anything that does result from it will be shared with Yanni anyway as he's the one who is paying the $ costs...my only investment is time. He just won't tell me how much it costs.
