By default Stars! saves to(or opens in) the last used folder. If a game is loaded when Stars! starts (via commandline options or windows file association) then the last used folder is whereever the .m file is located. If Stars! is simply opened and no files have been opened yet, the last used folder is wherever the Stars! executable file is located.

Stars! is a very old game - it does not have an install process and simply running the stars.exe file runs the game and it (mostly) doesn't matter where it is. Personally I recommend putting it in C:\Stars!\ (create the folder if necessary) and then creating sub-folders to keep each game's files in.

To keep backups of previous turns in a solo game:
- open your stars.ini file
- look for [Misc]
- add 'Backups=100' (the number is the number of years stored)

Now Stars! will create a folder called 'BACKUP.###' for every year. If you want to restore your turn you can copy the files back into your normal playing folder.
Note that only the .m, .x and .hst file are stored, not the .xy or .h file. The .xy file doesn't matter since that never changes, but the .h file holds all data of things you ever scanned (planets, enemy ship designs, ...) If you want to keep a backup of that as well for every year you'll need to use a batch file, I'm using one for that, let me know if you're interested.

While you have stars.ini open add under [Misc] 'NewReports=1' as well. This adds more detailed information if you do a dump of your planetary data ingame.

All you need to know about the stars.ini file you'll find here:
http://wiki.starsautohost.org/wiki/Stars.ini#Ini_file_--_sta rs. ini_.28in_the_Windows_directory.29

Maybe EoF can start translating with this page. Wink

You will only see the backup directories *after* genning a turn. (and of course after adding the line in the stars.ini file)

Are you asking about playing a game hosted on a different computer than the one on which you are playing. A game on Stars AutoHost (SAH) is an example of this. In this instance Stars! will not create a Backup folder, you have to do this yourself.

I have the files from SAH emailed to me and I then move the mail, with the attached .Mx file to a game folder so that I have a year by year archive of all the turns.

The Stars.ini file is created the first time you run Stars! itself. It will be located in the Windows main folder, generally in c:\Windows.

You should move your Stars! executable from the Desktop to its own folder, usually c:\Stars. That's where you will store your games, racefiles, utilities, the helpfile...

Also, you need to be real sure of what you're doing when restoring a game from backup. Saving a copy of all files to be overwritten is an easy safeguard that can avoid lots of grief.

*sigh*

Razz

Si tu as d'autre questions, je t'invite a m'envoyer un message privée. Sinon Micha nous tappera sur les doigts. Razz
