How about this guys Ill make this happen..
CA must be taken only by the beginners with no point penalty.

IMO, This will still have ALL teams taking CA, and no one taking JOAT or IT. Because the Beginner is under the instruction of the Pro's, it will be played like a Pro.

I vote for banning CA. Even under heavy point penalties, it will be too enticing such that all teams will take it anyway.

The question of CA really is should you go for the quick growth of that race or the long term development of IT or JoAT. CA on its own is very powerful just as a margenally played IT or JoAT can be. With a team however it gets more complicated since you have to look not only at your races growth but the growth of your entire alliance. Do you take CA and gamble with 1/12+ HP hybrids for your whole alliance relying on your ability to build and move orbital adjusters? Perhops go IT with no OBRM and set up mobile mineral fountains for your team? Maybe a -F JoAT with 20% growth for a monster start and quick territory claiming? Each path has is merits and disadvantages but those 3 races are grouped together because they are all easily made monsters.

The original groups in Open War were to represent this

Group 1: Monster Races
Group 2: War Fighting Economy Races
Group 3: War Fighting Toy Races
Group 4: What the hell good is AR?

Really the only restriction on group 1 should be no 'pro' rated player only.

Was going to say no TT allowed but that has strengths and weaknesses.
ok here's the deal with CA just 100 point penalty.
Other restrictions added to my last game settings post on page 3.

I can see the point of taking JoaT if you either want to rely on gateable warships or need a production monster when your other races are concentrating more on quality over quantity. I'll also say that their scouting ability is nothing to laugh at (and all races could take NAS and get extra points). CA, JoaT, and IT all have potential for explosive early growth as well as long-term buildup.
JoaT/SD/PP could be interesting if one or more races is a factoryless mining freak.

In my opinion without restirctions the distribution of CA:IT:JOAt races would be like 90:9:1 in 1st group.
I would choose 1 of this options:

1) ban CA and 150 point restiction for IT
2) 150p. restriction for IT and 300p. for CA.

Why ?
In games i played there were usually 150-100p. restrictions for CA and IT races and it wasnt the team games.
I usually choose the IT anyway and still wasn't hard to make a strong race, with ~100 points less.
Here we got team game so at start we know this race will be useful to 2 others. In case of CA that means easy terraform for all, thats why restictions must be bigger.
In case of IT its just better gates, gating heavy ships is nice tactical advantage, but not as much necessary.
And what does have Joat ?.
Some say scanners... But i say its not much problem have 1 race without NAS and probably much better get SS for scanners
Joat has nice ecnonomy, but you can make economy monster with HE as well. And probably all teams will need only 1 good economy race and 2 others with useful toys (like IT CA)

that's my point, but offcourse you're the boss

Is CA so important if all your races have an immunity? Easiest way to avoid hab overlap is for all races to have the same immunity and adjust the narrowed (to afford the immunity) habs so there is no significant overlap. Narrow habs and an immunity means tastier greens and less terraforming required. A JoaT doing all your scanning early on can help you find those lovelies in short order especially if your team mates transfer their scouts to the JoaT immediately Smile

Bretter - check your PM's for my email address.

edit: beginner only for CA? Not every team has a "beginner." I think that restriction should be removed.

It limits choices. If my team wants a CA, Einherjock has to play it. What if he would rather play WM?

I largely agree with Deuce. What about allowing any non-pro to play a group 1 race?

IMO the main thing is to encourage beginners to play one of the easier PRTs (IT,CA,JOAT,SD,IS). WM, SS, PP & AR are quite difficult to play well so a more experienced player should play those.

If it had been me I probably would have applied penalties for CA (say 180 RW points) & IT (say 100 RW points) to encourage a more even spread of group 1 races. In fact, with those penalties, tho unlikely it would not be unthinkable to take no group 1 race.

I was going to ban CA completely. CA has awesome benefits for them selves. In a team game I believe all the other team will benefit from terraform. If Einherjock wants to play WM than he can do so or to benfit his team by getting CA he or the team will have to make that choice. If he doesnt want to play CA then he can choose Joat or IT or any of the other race groups. Considering the rules the races you choose is up to you. Each player of the team can pick 1 race from each race group besides pros that are exempt from group 1 completely.

I Know the pros will be helping there team members with there turns and strategies but I feel CA is the strongest of the Group/game thus i dont want it in the hands of the pros and want it limited to the beginners only.

Edit: Looking back at your post you said you were between beginner and experience you are either or. Its based on how many games you played.

Rules say that 1 to 5 games puts you as beginner. So your team is good to go and your the beginner.
