I just bought a laptop and want to put stars on it. Unfortunately I bought a Stars! multipack cd off the internet that appears to have an imbedded serial # in it.

Is there any way to find out what the imbedded serial # is? If not would it be possible to buy a new serial # and switch back and forth between computers doing turns?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Windows Vista auto trips security on stars when installed. Did not do this on XP.

Ron may be able to help with this, but...

Even with different serials you can do this, just be careful to delete the x file before saving it(after you loaded it of course)

The problem is the x file is stamped with two codes, one identifies the computer and the other identifies the serial code(which are linked somehow). When the x file is created it is stamped with both, but when it is updated only the serial is (re)stamped. so if you update the file on a different computer to the one that created it, the computer and serial stamps won't match and the copy protection is triggered.

Deleting and resaving your x file before uploading is a good habit to get into anyway as Stars! will sometimes ignore orders made after you clicked save and submit.

Vista does what now?!?

Vista forbid any programs access to any files short of your "My Documents" folder and sub folders...

Yeah, it's that stupid...

You just gotta know how to configure Vista to get the most out of it Smile

People hated XP just as much when it came out.. Vista is a much better OS it just breaks a lot of applications because of a version number change and lack of legacy support. That's all users tend to notice, not the good stuff under the hood Wink

And I guess if you don't run enough ram you really notice the performance difference..

Dayng1, what path are you trying to install stars to, and what specific error message do you get?

I'm sorry, but if I have to decide between an old but very confortable and reliable car and a sport car which don't even have enough space for me to sit in behind the wheel... I won't even consider taking the sport car.

to clarify my inital post when I installed my stars multipack cd on xp it just popped up good (no serial # screen). when I tried on vista32 it wanted the serial # after installation when I tried to play.

Thank you for that info gible. I see your point about switching .x files between computers. my main concern was if games were somehow limited to only accept a file from a certain serial #.

since this is not the case I will just buy a new # from ron when the laptop gets delivered. fantastic service he provides here anyway. on a personal note I hate vista and would rather use a 1980's 2 floppy ibm clone.

just kidding but vista is very sloppy and buggy. newer is not always better

I think your problem come from the fact that STARS! write a .ini file in the Windows root directory. I beleive that is also where the serial number is embedded.

Because Vista forbid any program from witting anything out of the My Documents folder, that ini file is never written and you are boned. If I am right, it also mean that you will never be able to enter your serial key only once: you would need to enter it every single time you start the game.

Here is an alternative which could possibly work with Vista.

you are right that DOSBOX may be a viable alternative to the vista install problem. I did not put it on my comp or any of the old cd dos games I used to play after it crashed.

DOH! I should have thought of that. if anybody has a cd copy of emperor of the fading suns I would kill for an iso. it is abandonware and the only versions I can find are rips without sound and some graphics.

You could always request it at http://www.abandonia.com/
If it is really Abandonware than we will be happy to help you if we can. We might also already have it in our ISO archive cellar, but the rule in our forum is that you must have a minimum amount of posts before you can have access to it.

And no spamming... Wink

Slightly off topic, but I used to absolutely hate Vista. I recently had to replace a laptop and Dell only supply Vista with the Studio 15's so I was pretty apprehensive..... Lo and behold, with a few days to get used to it, I love it.

Much LESS buggy than XP (and I loved XP) and performs really well. Just make sure that your hardware specs are up to standard as it really chugs on older machines.

Only thing is that you need to disable the User Account Controls (which gives you those pop ups every time you do something in Vista), and you are set.

Since when is XP buggy?

In five year I must have crashed it about thrice... By running dodgy software.

XP runs ok, but it has a lot of security holes. You'd be surprised how easy it is to break XP security, even SP2. The biggest problem with it is unsavvy computer users who click every prompt their browser spits out at them and then wonders why their PC is running slow with 10 different malware applications installed.

Vista can be configured to allow access to any folder you wish on the OS drive. UAC is a good first thing to turn off, and failing that you can manually change security permissions on the folder you are having trouble with.

Try windows 7! It's all the good stuff of vista I am referring to without the bad stuff that you have probably run across which formed your negative opinion Wink

How did you go with your problem Dayng1? Solved?

I installed Stars! on my Vista desktop with no problems. It asked me for my Serial# at install, and it pops a "Are you sure you want to run this program" dialog every time I launch it, but it runs just fine.

That's because you have the 32 bits version of Vista. 64 bits version of Vista can't run 16 bits application at all, period.

Also, unless you negated that option in Vista, it won't allow any program to write a file out of your "My Documents" folder(s). This mean that STARS! will ask your serial every time you start it because the program itself is not allowed to create the .ini file in the base Windows folder like most Win 3.1 programs used to do back in the days...

I heard that it is possible to remove that option though, so all hope is not lost. ^_^

Stars runs great on Vista 32 bit, all you need to do is right click on the stars exe and goto the security tab and change the permission for it to write to allow, and bingo your set.

The only problem i have found is if you use a USB hard drive and remove it and attach it often you sometime need to enter the stars password again.

I have also created a stars icon set that improves the original version that vista cant display very well, if you search these forums for vista icon it should come up in a post.

Whatch out for the Emperor bug then! That's very important for you not to trigger it unintentionally if your hardware code keep changing all the time.

The links to those icons no longer work. I know I downloaded them, I remember downloading them, hell I commented about them, but I can't find them or I'd put them up again.

Impossible de contourner ce problème directement avec Vista 64bits. Il est retardé comme ça, Vista 64 bits.
