If you want me to flesh out all the mechanic descriptions (e.g. PRT, LRT) then I could.

At risk of provoking a heart attack (and with the caveat that I wont do anything for the next couple of months as stupidly busy) I aways fancied sticking together an online course in newb training.
Borrow heavily from a few old JC articles (Use them as set texts?)
Stick in a couple of tests (using this race do this in a test bed).
Race design and why.
Colony strategies.
Research assignments - CE is disliked by most players, find 3 reasons against using it and 1 for using it. Design a race that you think benefits from the choice of CE and post it.

Sounds good to me Smile Apart from the classic JC article and Altruists tips, there isn't that much directly instructional stuff around..its all commentary on narrow aspects of Stars!.

Actually, an idea for a better player(than me) ...write a commentary article to be read during the tutorial for beginners who've played a game or two and redoing the tut for the articles commentary.

hummm yeah....I've upgraded the Mediawiki software to 1.14.0. Also upgraded/removed/replaced all extensions as appropriate. Note that the file: prefix is now a reserved prefix so use local: instead for downloads(but I think I'm the only one using that anyway). See Special:Version for details.

hi,

thank you gible for creating stars wiki. it is a great resource I use a lot.

if there was 1 thing you could change to make it better it would be smartphone compatability. I have a palm treo 755p and most of the site is unusable/unreadable.

thanks again for your great work.

As I mentioned somewhere here I'm in the process of copying the help file aka Stars! Players Guide into the wiki and correcting as I go. Could some of the more experienced people please follow my progress and keep an eye on any corrections I miss or get wrong. Micha? Iztok? Sally? Gakl? Bueller?

Having done the little I've done so far I can recommend it to pretty much everyone, so many questions I've seen come up here could have been answered with RTFM, if only we'd remembered what was in it.

The easiest follow points are probably the recent changes or Category:Stars! Player's Guide

The few pages I've read seem pretty ok. Congratulations on a nice job! Smile

But I'd like to see the pages where changes from the original helpfile have been made clearly marked, or perhaps a link to the original page would be enough. Sherlock

Also, could it be possible to collate the info into a less atomized version? One of the problems with the original hlp file, IMHO, is the difficulty in getting anywhere without the search function. In your wiki it should be possible to have a handful "big" pages instead of a thousand mobile-phone-sized snippets. Deal

I considered entering the original text, saving the page, and then correcting; to preserve the historical information, but I thought that might have been a bit too anal Laughing links to that awful extraction would be too easy tho.

Yeah I've been trying to do that somewhat, I'm trying to avoid monster pages(eg) and more importantly making sure I can keep track of what links where - linking to a section of a page is fine, as long as I remember that the page I need to link to is now a section of another page. Mostly I've been doing the amalgamations like so using tooltips to reduce the barrage of info, and providing another page with full (printable!) info of that section. and Again with this but separated from that.

Making a few of monster pages wouldn't be hard tho - just transclude whatever other content you want only a single page (which is how the utils full index works) and fill the transcluded pages so they work both ways.

Interconnecting the SPG pages with the existing wiki(or FAQ) content is going to be more interesting...only the Ground Combat and stars.ini pages have collided so far - I swallowed the existing stars.ini page whole into an amalgamated page. (note to self: add back links for each individual file description page)

Well, the original extraction could be considered a historical artifact. Rolling Eyes

But the improved/corrected version should probably carry a note telling who/when/why was it changed (i.e: fix typo, fix math, add info, merge articles, etc...)

With just 100k in 2009 I wouldn't call that a "Monster"... At most, a QuickStart. Twisted Evil

That should be easier to do for a few dozen "large" pages than for a few hundred "atom" pages. Deal

It is a lot of info, to be sure. It won't be easy to organize & display it all. Better check that you have enough fuel left for the whole trip. Cheers

A quick heads up that I'm going to try and make the wiki multi-language this week, starting with french. While I have a fair idea what's involved and no adverse effects are expected, I haven't looked closely at the specific details/implications while the process happens so be warned that the wiki may not behave normally (or at all).

Work on the Stars!Players Guide continues and is not expected to finish anytime soon.

(Hey kids! Its all up and working! So go edit to your hearts content. Eagle of Fire is in charge (Google translate can only do so much) so if you have any questions, I'm sure Eagle of Fire will be happy to help you)

I did a quick google translate job on the err main page and the sidebar so its not quite so empty, tho most of those links don't have pages yet.

You can create language links by simply inserting en:pagename (or fr:pagename from the current wiki) , which I've done for the main page and Related Websites pages.

You can redirect to english pages, by inserting #redirect en:pagename ,which I've done for the three Stars!wiki links at the bottom and my userpage.

You can transclude content from the english wiki. Inserting will transclude Template:templatename, inserting will transclude pagename etc, which I've done for Sites Web connexes. Transcluding stuff doesn't always work well, eg the image at the bottom of Sites Web connexes had to be uploaded to the french site and would not transclude despite the reference to the image coming from the transcluded page.

Something I noticed to be careful of, when creating new pages with spaces in the name, the créer cette page link in the 404 page content mangled the page name when I was making the Sites Web connexes page(to Sites+Web+connexes instead of Sites_Web_connexes), but the créer link at the top of the page didn't.

You can link to the download files in the same way as the english wiki by using the local: prefix (eg download stars.zip )

Here is a tip: don't use online translators at all. Laughing

I would say online translators can be useful, but not for something you have to publish.

If you receive something in a language you don't understand, then an online translator can most of the time give you at least some idea what it is about, if you can identify the language.

A free online translator which I find pretty good is this one: http://www.freetranslation.com/

No, I don't understand French, and I did not try to run his text through an online translator. But what would your conclusion on the content of an e-mail be if the online translation only translated the words "problem", "delay" and "month", when the e-mail came from a company you had ordered something from ?

With some idea about the context, even a few translated words can give a lot of information, and most online translators translate most of the words (though not necessarily correctly).

In addition, you do not need an online translator to get a bad translation. One example I have seen in English to Danish translation was the word "threading" being translated the "trådning", which means threading a needle. Unfortunately, that was not what was meat, what was meant was "threading" as in creating a thread on/in a bolt or nut, which is "gevind" in Danish. Two very different things, with different names in Danish, but the same name in English.

In my Stars! wanderings a few years backup I downloaded version 3.06 of the Stars! Calculator along with other files dated a bit earlier (2001 Sep 1 versus 3.06's 2001 Nov 18), like its help file and the source.

Don't have the original compressed download file that these came in. I may have found them on the ftp server I originally got version 3.06 from, ftp-library.southern.edu (which doesn't exist now). I just don't remember. Confused

I'll send gible the help file via PM, as it's under the length limit (including the program and source puts it up to 453kB).

Since I just compiled them, for those who are curious about such things...

At this point the Stars!wiki Statistics reports 944 total pages of which 507 are of significant size, 179 uploaded media files, 109 registered users and a total of 414,390 page views. There are 158 files available for download totaling 134MB. For the last 24hrs, Firestats reports 55 visits and 441 page views. AWStats reports an average of 828 page views and 63.83MB per day so far this month, and an average of 925MB per month so far this year. Both stats not including traffic generated by robots, worms, or replies with special HTTP status codes.

(Stats are recorded separately for wiki.gible.net and fr.wiki.gible.net)
