Penta: a Stars! team game for 5 teams of 3 players each.
Host Name: Micha
Host e-mail: micha.vandormael@box.be (replace box with pandora to mail me)
Version: Registered 2.6 or 2.7 jRC3

Game will be on Autohost.

Turn rate: Tu-W-Th-F-Sa for at least the first 20 turns, and will change to Tu-Th-Sa upon request of any one team after turn 20.
Turns are generated at 4.00 AM GMT.

Number of Players: 15
Universe size: Large
Universe density: Normal
Player Starting Positions: Distant
Skill Level: Advanced

Game Options:
___ Beginner: Maximum Minerals
_x_ Slower Tech Advances
_x_ Accelerated BBS
___ No Random Events
___ Computer Players Form Alliances
___ Public Player Scores
___ Galaxy Clumping

Introduction: We will start with a large normal universe, a neutral thrid party will remap the planets into the shape of a pentagon, with a hollowed pentagon inside, and a small grouping of planets in the very center. All the players in a team will start near each other, grouped around the outer corners.

The universe will look something like:
http://home.scarlet.be/ert/stars/penta3.gif
This is a very rough idea, the HW positions won't be exactly like this! Just to give you an idea. The setup person is very experienced with this sort of games, and will do his best to make sure that all team positions are fair relative to one another.
Due to the remap the density will be more dense than the advertised normal!

The setup person might play a 16th race as an observer.

Rules:
- ALL players except your teammates will be set to enemy (neutral party will check from time to time), battle orders will be set to attack enemies (unless in special cases when you want to infiltrate enemy minefiels without sweeping).
- PP and IT are banned (primarily for setup reasons).
- No bug/feature listed in the NG FAQ is allowed, except for chaff and fleet dodge (if you can get it to work). You can find a good (but not complete!) bug list at http://www.starsfaq.com/bugs.htm or here at the forum in The Academy.
- Passwords will not change unless you send the new one(s) to the third party, this to find replacements should a team suddenly disappear.
- One person playing more than one race is not allowed, unless when teammates are on hollidays or when a race is close to death.

Victory conditions:
There will be five Target planets, one at each outer corner of the pentagon, and one Target planet in the center (six in total). The winner of the game is the team that owns the most target planets at the year 2500. If there is a tie, then the game will be extended in 10 year sections until the tie is broken. If at any time one team owns 4 or more of the target planets, then that team is declared the winner immediately.
To own a Target planet, it must be colonized and have population there.

PLEASE PASSWORD YOUR RACEFILES! The host will be playing and since the game will be on AutoHost everyone will have access to your turn-files!

Please apply with a full team, matching up solo players doesn't work for 99% of the time, you'll need a team that is used to playing together.
To save a slot in the game: send me an email with the names and email adresses of the 3 players of your team. Race files are expected within a week, they will be send to me, I will forward them to the neutral party and include you in the mail, when you receive that mail you send your password to the neutral party (but NOT to me of course!!).
The setup of the universe might be a pain because of the remap, so it might take a week, depending on the luck of the neutral party and his Real Life.

Kind regards,
mch

I'm tentatively interested. I have several team games under my belt, and am willing to be a team leader if needed.
I note that moving to a 3-a-week gen schedule after the 20's will make life much easier.

I would like to publicly give credit here for all the work Micha did to figure out exactly how to make this game work.

The concept of the game was fairly easy. But working with all the different re-map programs, to find a way to get the universe shaped properly, AND have the players in a team start near each other, is a work of perseverence.

Great job!

Hi, I've got a team of 3 adv/exp players, one of whom says he's played in a game with you before. A few questions: does controlling 4 of the planets before the year 2500 mean instant victory? i.e. controlling say 4 by year 2407. Also, when is the starting date? 2 of us are writing exams in early April, so we'd like to start after the 10'th if possible. Is it possible to pick starting positions in your own cluster? On battle plans: Are you allowed to target a specific person's ships even though you know 6 different enemies are going to arrive at the battle? Is communication between teams allowed?

I have helped Micha design the game, and will answer the questions. If I happen to be wrong, then I am sure he will correct me. Smile

Yes. ANY time there are four planet controlled by one team, then it is instant victory, even if before 2500.

The person doing the actual planet setup (not a player) is hoping to generate the universe the first or second weekend in April. After that we will need to wait for the game to get put on AH, which can take 1-7 days, depending on how busy things are. So odds are good that the game will not start before the 10th of April.

Personally, I do not mind a small delay. We have been discussing this game for weeks. A little more delay will not hurt. So if the game is ready early I do not think it will be a problem waiting until the 10th.

The bigger key here is to send an email to Micha to reserve your team slot for the game. He will probably be accepting teams on a first-come, first-served basis.

Quote:

Is it possible to pick starting positions in your own cluster?

I wish. Sad Seriously, I want that. But with 15 players it is going to be very tough just to get a fair setup for the placement of the teams. So we took that option out of the posted rules. Micha has been doing a lot of work to determine how to set up the game, and maybe it is possible with some of the new things that he has learned. The answer is no unless he tells you otherwise.

Quote:

On battle plans: Are you allowed to target a specific person's ships even though you know 6 different enemies are going to arrive at the battle?

As long as all players from the other teams are set to enemy, that is acceptable. The intent is not to block valid strategies, but to prevent teams from working together.

Quote:

Is communication between teams allowed?

That sounds like a question that I would ask. Smile

The intent of the game is for teams NOT to work together. The problem I see is that if teams communicate and work together, then they can potentially stop a team from winning. This could make the game take a lot longer. And if teams need to work together to beat another team that is winning, then that is (IMO) another way of saying that the 'winning' team is better.

Now if you want to communicate with another team to set up boundaries, or a temporary NAP (non aggression pact), then the issue gets fuzzier.

My opinion would be: in-game messages are acceptable, though alliances (including tech trading) are not acceptable. Micha?

My brother in arms, "He who dances with Rules", answered your questions very well. I'll add some extra and some unnecessary comments. Grin

Are you planning to win that fast? That would mean going through 2 teams (or at least of the closest two player of the two neighbouring teams) and take the middle planet ...
Anyway, the idea is a _team_ game, 3 races working _together_, not 3 QS who work seperately. In 2407 you won't even had time to set up a decent tech trade for example.
Quote:

Is it possible to pick starting positions in your own cluster?

Like Raindancer said: it is difficult to do this and might be even impossible (taking into account Real Life limitations), so I would not suggest counting on it when designing your races.
Quote:

On battle plans: Are you allowed to target a specific person's ships even though you know 6 different enemies are going to arrive at the battle?

The idea is to fight everyone except your own team, as long as that happens it's according the rules.
In this particular case targetting a specific race won't work since all other enemies on the board will attack your ships and they will defend themself by shooting back at all enemies, not only at that specific race.
Changes in battle plans are of course allowed when you don't want to sweep mines (as noted in my first post), an example of another exception is Wolf/Lamb trading ...
Quote:

Is communication between teams allowed?

You may communicate (I can't control emails being sent) but you can't work together, they are ENEMIES, not just the setting in the player relations but everything that the word means, you do not like them, you are not going to give them anything, no tech, no planets, no free passage, ... IOW why would you even _want_ to communicate? To say: "go away or I'll kill that fleet"? No, because that should be: "go away and I'll kill that fleet anyway!" Grin
Point is to prevent from 2 teams or more to gang up on one team, that would 6 against 3, where is the fun in that??

regards,
mch

This is a game that I've been waiting for. I have played several team games before and won. I believe in sacrificing for the benefit for the whole team. Any team that needs a good teammate, I am one of them.

Hi Micha,

Please change your email address for me to primary: addresses removed, contact made! Smile, since I'll only be able to read my email on the other address once a week at most.

When do you want our race files, and to whom must we send them?

Cheers,

Andre, Shaun and Theuns

Unfortunately I lost all contact with one team before the game even started Crying or Very Sad which means I'm looking for a new fifth team to take their place.
You can find the setup in the first post of this topic.

The final team has completed, thus found its 3rd member.
Our races are being completed at the time of writing this message. They will be sent soon to the host for setting up the game.
I am glad to be able to join this one. Hopefully everyone is still in the mood to get this nice game-setup going.

I have submitted the files for team 5 to Ken Mitchel about 1.5 hours ago. Ken indicated he will be working on the setup later today.

Glad to be a part of this very interesting game setup that Micha has devised. It should be a lot of fun. May the best team win, HEE, HEE, HEE!!! Laughing

In case the above is a bit too subtle, how about Razz

This was the most rocky start I ever had in my whole hosting career! But now the game has started, files have been sent to Ron.
Thanks to all players for hanging on and being incredibly patient!

Many many many thanks to Ken for doing the setup! He's just too good! I don't know what I'd do without him! (Now where's that smily for eternal gratitude?) Grin

Ron, when you have the time you can lock this topic and it would be nice to have a private forum, thanks!

Kind regards,
mch
