PRT-handicap game, two race alliance win.
OR
5 teams of 3 races (with the limitation that CA is only allowed if the whole team is CA).
OR
Another team game, assign teams by map location and have no coordination and planning beforehand, so they'll have to live with what they end up with.

Its not crazy, merely insane Some people actually prefer playing huge games. They just don't hang around here too often.
[Edit: this is turning into a wall-o-text]
For a beginner game(which is what you really need to be playing in) medium is the biggest I'd recommend simply because you won't learn anything more from a larger universe, and with the number of mistakes you'll be making, you'll have to live with them for a long, long time. Most Stars games eventually slow down to 3 turns a week, huge ones can get down to 1 or 2, and take more turns anyway making for a game that can last over a year, even a normal (small or medium) game lasts for months.
The other settings are up to you, but I do recommend choosing them before you start, if your players *really* want a particular setting, they'll ask for it.
What to choose from?
Number of players: 2 is a duel, which you *can* negotiate settings for but for most games 6 is a good minimum, 8-10 is common. The number of players impacts heavily on the universe size, 30-40 planets per player is usually a good amount = small/packed or medium/sparse for 6 players, medium/normal for 8 players. If you pick a player number then you can pick a universe size, which helps race design - sparse uni = bigger distance between fuel stops, less planet hopping opportunities. dense or packed = more fuel stops & more planet hopping.
Teams? alliances? before? during? Again better to choose. A plain alliances-allowed no-pregame-teams (vanilla) game is still the most common - and popular. Next most popular is probably pregame (permanent-alliance) teams, but then you'll probably want to get someone to move the HWs otherwise you'll likely get one team together(a huge advantage) - which of course you can't do as you're playing (fortunately we're all pretty helpful around here ). Followed by the your-neighbour-are-your-team games and finally the backstabbing-allowed (people really hate that for some reason ).
PRT bans? Handicaps? Traditionally CA is plain banned. Lately theres been a trend to handicap it severely, also JOAT, IT and HE to lesser extents. Due to lack of experience I suppose, but the CA ban is not so common in beginner games. If you look around, you'll find various RW point-cost handicaps for some or all PRTS designed to balance them out. If you put any restrictions on races(and most games do), you'll need someone to check races for you.
Normal for the other game settings is distant start positions, no max mins, normal tech speed, no AIs(so who cares if they ally), yes accelerated bbs play, no no random events and clumping is up to your taste. The most important ones here are bbs play, tech speed and max mins as they dramatically affect gameplay.
I also suggest you 'formally' restrict the game to beginners or near beginners - just to keep things even.
Finally, once you decide, if you need a third party host, just ask for one. Somone always volunteers to help

non-aggression pacts: forbidden
alliances: by player vote on turn 2, pick 1 of (does not alter victory condition!)
- forbidden with player in 1st
- 1st must ally with last, 2nd with 2nd to last, etc.
- none
- any
(tie votes broken by host)
host will not be playing
no player will be set to "missing" (they become food for the others)
no replacements
turn generation: daily (yes, this will make people have to make choices later on in the game)
|
Rules like this really look to be a hosts nightmare. It would involve the host looking through each players turn to make sure there is no NAPs, that alliances are in proper order each turn or to broadcast who player #1 is each turn if PPS isnt used.
As for the missing part for other players, all it will do is delay turn generation. When a player is set to inactive the AI really does nothing, maybe builds a defence or 2 but that is it.
Turn generation at daily would be a large deterent in later game and could cause some people to drop, unbalancing the game, which can ruin it very quickly. The ability to request a 3 turn a week generation is really very helpful when your trying to manage a huge empire without getting killed by your wife.

I'm looking for a game, but I cannot start until April 1 - yeah, no fooling I'll be on holiday until then.
DaYng1, this is all good input, just remember YOU get to chose the parameters of this game. It's your game after all.
For a beginner game, my recommendation would be:
- Players 8-10, Medium/Normal, Distant
- Race Restrictions: Light - this is a Beginner game after all
(I'm sure someone will give good examples of light restrictions)
- ABBS, PPS (and I don't like Clumping, personally)
- Alliances: no in-game restrictions (too hard to monitor anyway)
- Victory: Single player by vote, anytime after 70 turns
- Turn Gens: Daily to 2420, slow upon request anytime after
- Replacements for dropps
Good luck! I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

I am kinda partial to the ca tt curbstompn idea. that kinda of sounds like fun.
those beginner games sound too restrictive.
I am a beginner so I would get trampled in a ca tt game.
that kind of beatdown would put my mistakes in glaring focus.
anybody intrested in a ca tt game?

I have an idea for a CA-themed game.
One player plays a scary TT CA.
The other players are allied and play handicapped races; use above-listed handicap scores, with some wiggle room for points depending on number of allies.
With 6 or more players, there could be two allied CA monsters.

The point handicaps would need to depend on the ratio of allies / monsters.

This leads me to suggest a similar, possibly nastier type of game setup based on the Mafia Game.
How this would work is, assuming you have around 8 players, two races are members of an evil Syndicate and the other races are part of the Confederation. Syndicate races will use the standard handicap setup, Confederation races will take an additional 100-200 point penalty. The Syndicate players will be on a team and know who each other are; while the Confederation players will be on a team but left to guess who they can trust and who they can't.
For 10-13 players, there could be three Syndicate members, and four for more than that.

Problem with Mafia is that the Mafia almost always win.
|
Nah. It depends on the ratio of mafia to townsfolk and on what other roles there are. There's a lot of variants to the game, including multi-faction realpolitik where every player has one or more unique special abilities.

With no special rules, the Mafia will win most of the time if they play well. All the Mafia have to do is play for themselves rather than as a team, and the civvies all die.
