i didn't know that there was this much interest in stars. so i don't know what is going on in 'the community'. which of the clones/offshoots is most complete? do any of them have a working ai? which would be easyest to create an ai in?

afaik the only clones that are complete and active enough are Thousand Parsec, hxNova and Nova. All have easily contactable developers, tho *Nova are both when-I-have-time projects. OTOH *Nova strict Stars! clone whereas TP is a rules framework so making an AI for *Nova should be simpler.
The wiki page for clones is as complete as I can make it, and is one that I mostly try to keep up to date.
- The Thousand Parsec page is well maintained by JLP(TP dev), tho naturally he skips most of the going ons at TP(theyz buzy).
- The Étoiles client for Freestars is active. I'm not sure about the other clients as I've been neglecting them since I marked Freestars itself as inactive since 2004. Which is somewhat of a shame as it designed with independant clients/AI in mind.
- The only outstanding clone info I have is that Freestars 2.x seems to have dropped from the web but I'll talk to Omnivore before I change it to dead.

I am continuing to work on the Étoiles client when I have time. Advancement can be seen at http://pascal.wassong.free.fr/Etoiles/news.html You can also try it out.
LEit also gave me commit access to the Freestars project. I begun to make some small improvments for the server. But I would like to focus on the client, so I would prefer that there are other people working on the server. But as my client as no sense without a server I will probably have to improve it too.
For the AI part, all Freestars data are in XML files, so it is easy to read .m files and to write .x files. And the rules are also described in an XML file. But I wouldn't say that writing an AI is easy, for 2 reasons, inherent to the game:
- the amount of info to handle is huge,
- writing an algorithm doing something interesting is not easy.
