I have a few questions. First, is the private game forum really a place for people playing a particular game to post "public" messages? Or can real diplomacy occur there? I was planning on sending email messages to my future allied partner. Is there a methood to do this in the game itself? I have never seen a way to send messages or even a diplomacy section built into the game. I mean how do you share tech? I hope my partner has some idea on how we can share research.
So, if the forum is a place to "leak" public statements then by all means keep it open to visitors so that they can follow along with the game. I poked around in the forums and didn't find much of anything though.
Ok, that is it cause I just realized that most of my other questions are better handled elsewhere in a different forum.

When you are playing in multiplayer mode there is a little envelope icon in the messages part of the screen. Clicking on this will allow you to send an in game message to Everyone or any specific player in the game. This allows you to send private messages to other players in the game if you desire. The unfortunate part of sending messages this way is that the person you are sending it to will not get it until the next turn is generated and therefore you will not receive their response (in game) until the turn after that. That is why many people use e-mail for corresponding as most things are better to deal with, without the two year turn around.

As for trading technology you can find plenty of infromation at the Stars FAQ site, specifically at: http://www.starsfaq.com/tech_trade.htm
or by reading the strategy guide which can be found at the crisium site, specifically at: http://www.crisium.com/stars/strategy.htm

I hope that helps you out a bit.

Also, there is a box, the shortcut for which is F7. This opens am enu from which you can select any race and set the stance your race takes towards them.

Ok, I got both downloads and I will do some studying to make myself as useful as posible to my ally.
Boy, have I a lot to learn. I have been reading about stuff I have never heard of. Chaff? Cheap Starbases? Who the heck thinks up this sort of stuff? North south Minefield movement? I thought about that for a while and it should be easy to catch. About the starbase though. One could only do it once or twice really. Can one hold starbases in the incomplete stage? To allow other worlds to reach .99 complete stage so that one could finish off 10 to 20 starbases at once with the new cheap equipment? That could make quite a difference in any game.

Yes, make planets give only leftover resources to research. Set research to 100%. Planets building these bases (that have them at 99%) give their resources all to research. Wait until all planets are set to go.

Also: cycle between the ten design slots as upgrading costs nothing? I still am not sure on that but I know its a big reduction for changing to exact same design.
