Hi All,

I have decided to jump back in after 5 years of being out of Stars! So here's a new game for you to sink your fangs into... let me know if you're interested!

john *dot gates at ITT *dot com

Stone Age Slaughter 1

Overview:

In this game, players will be challenged to make the most of low-end tech and possibly re-think race design fundamentals to get the best chances for success in this environment. The usual strategy of maximizing cheap weapons tech will now have competing options on the tech track because of game and race settings.

Sticks and stones can break your bones!

Special Game Rules:

1. No Tech Trading Allowed. Tech trading is FORBIDDEN in this game (no wolf/lamb trading, no scrap ships, no pop drops on allies). Tech gains through legitimate battle with enemies is of course encouraged. Wink This is difficult to judge from afar, we are all counting on honor and pride to preserve this rule. It takes TWO to violate this.

2. No pre-game alliances PLEASE (this ruins the game for all). Temporary alliances are of course allowed as the game develops.

3. No cheating (split fleet dodge and chaff are allowed)

Game settings:

Players: 8 intermediate level (you should have at least one multi-player win… rusty old timers like me are also welcome; it’s like riding a bike I’m sure!) Advanced players welcome!

Size: Small / Dense

Slow Tech Advances

Private scores

Accelerated BBS = ON

Victory: Last man standing or by unanimous vote of remaining players.

HOST IS PLAYING

Generation Schedule: M-F until turn 30, and then to M-W-F when two or more players have requested a slowdown.

Players missing more than 5 turns will be set to inactive. PLEASE be committed to finishing the game before you join.

Special Race Requirements:

1. All races MUST take the Bleeding Edge Tech LRT
2. All races MUST take Weapons Expensive (+75% cost)
3. All PRT’s allowed with no other restrictions

PLAYERS CONFIRMED SO FAR

John G (host)
Simon S
Stephen P
Ken B
Marduk
Coyote
Mac1
Alter Ego

GAME IS FULL!

So far I have showed discipline and haven't joined a single game because we are moving to another flat next month and usually that's chaotic accompied by problems with the internet-connection... but I am sooo tempted to join and suddenly I think this time there will be no problems, everything will run smoothly and I can safely join a game of Stars.

How serious are you about "intermediate"? Is it a minimum requirement or the max. I am no expert and quite lost in huge universes but I might be a bit beyond intermediate in small universes (plural of universe does look a bit funny).

I have played a game like this before, and it is quite fun. A very nice departure from the typical.

Intermediate is the minimum level, and advanced players are welcome. I like a good challenge. Smile

Hope you can join! Just let me know. I'm hoping to start up in a couple weeks to give players some time to figure out their race designs. There are so many ways to approach these parameters...

Cool

John

I am SO into this!

I'm a crusty old-timer myself - played quite a few advance/expert games around 1999 - but only about 2 games total since my kids were born. (Actually, a whole lot changed around then...)

But yeah - I'm into this.

I am certainly interested, but I may have a PC problem in the near future.

My CPU fan sounds like it has a bad bearing. I have ordered a new PC, but it will not arrive until sometime next week, and then I will have to install the programs I use.

The new PC looks like a nice change, though. A 3.0 GHz dual core processor, 1333 MHz FSB, 2 GB RAM and a Quadro 570 Graphics card...

There is one possible problem with the new PC, though. I selected "... XP Pro downgrade option with media" when ordering it, but I am not certain which OS it will be delivered with. I think I read somewhere that Windows Vista Business does support 16 bit programs, though.

I have window$ vi$ta and stars! runs just fine, when I select which compatability mode to use. sounds like a nice machine, and the game may not be full in the next week. so commit to it and join the fun. we still have to submit race files to a 3rd party for verification and whatnot after that which gives you some time.

You have no problems running Stars! with Windows Vista ? Which type of Windows Vista are you running ?

Yes, it does look like a nice machine. I will design a race and submit it if I can find the time to do so.

Right.

Who wants to take over the job to check the race files and to send the game to Ron? It should be an easy job...

If I did not already have two games rolling, I would jump at a chance to play in this game.

I volunteer to check race files/host.

Wow, it's true what some say "there's no overkill"... Twisted Evil

Seriously, if that fan is of the kind that has bearings (many modern heavy-duty CPU fans don't have that kind of weakness), it should have a little port somewhere (probably concealed under a sticker) so you can pour a droplet of light machine oil in it. Voila, you fan is good for another year! Deal

Overkill ? The PC is about 7 year old, so it needed replacement anyway. As for your comment about bearings, all high speed fans require bearings, though they are usually needle bearings rather than ball bearings.

I am planning to host, but I am also playing. But if you would like to volunteer to host, that would be fine too. Just remember the special game rules (no tech trading being the primary one). You probably won't have to monitor this too closely, as I find most players are honorable, but you may have to just remind everyone once in a while.

This should be a fun game, so I hope we get the slots filled soon.

If there is strong interest, I'm not opposed to hosting a second game. I hope other hosts pick up this type of game also. Helps to balance out weapons development with the rest of the techs. I wonder if we will see Yak Cruisers? Wink

As I said, no overkill there, nothing to see, move along please. Rolling Eyes

But if a needle bearing has started to decay then indeed the fan is too old, too overworked, or both. Confused

And magnetic bearings aren't supposed to decay, or even need oil. I had one of those, but it was not big enough for my new CPU. Hit Computer

No Trade Tech is something for me.
If its possible and there are free slots i would really like to play this one.
Well i dont have experience in games here, i played couple of them with my friends. I'm not a beginner and i think i can handle but its your choice.

btw. thinking about some restrictions to races ? Probably CA would be really overpowered on this settings. Maybe some others too.

You are welcome to play. Send me an email at john *dot gates at ITT *dot com to confirm your contact info and for me to hold your slot, but you must be committed to playing through the end.

So far, stll only 4 confirmed players and several maybes.

No restrictions to PRT. I think anyone choosing CA PRT or any kind of monster race for that matter with these settings (against intermediate to advanced players) SHOULD expect strong opposition from a host of neighbors. So go ahead and take CA if you want. Wink

Count me in - I have about eight months with more free time than I'm used to, and my other two games will have very limited MM requirements compared to what I'm used to; together about equal to one 'normal' game.

My only concern about this game is that half of us will probably pick the same PRT. At least the other details should be different.

thanks, Marduk. Email me your contact information to confirm, and you'll have a spot!

But if I were you, I would be taking the PRT that can most effectively deal with the PRT that you think half the players will take. Haha. There are some very interesting choices available, often overlooked.

Best of luck!
