In a depressing mood, Micha?
Just alone in the Fledging Admiral games there are 18 unique players, of those are 5 newbies. So I think that the situation is much better than your dark mood makes it look like.
When taking into account that Stars is old, without fancy graphics and with absolutely no advertisement, I am quite astonished that it is still possible to interest so many new players for Stars.
On the other hand, Stars is one of the best strat & tact games, so why should it be differently *grin

and if you look closely at the players/hosts, quite a few of the games hosted are "independant" of HWF too.
We're not the only life in Stars! ...I found a small group at the XKCD forums too.

I know at least one of them specifically didn't want to join Autohost, for whatever reason. (in his defense, I knew about AH long before I decided I wanted to join and play with others, so it's not too uncommon)
