The 2nd Diadochi War |

I am currently doing some testing & creating a new 10-player template for UC. This will take me up to 24 hours at which time I will announce that we will do one of the following:
1. Use a large universe
2. Use a huge universe
3. Use a large universe stretched to huge.
Once that decision is made I will send instructions to Joseph describing the setup procedure (if any of you want a copy let me know & I'll CC you). I suspect that Joseph will need a few days to complete the setup.
Race files can be sent to Joseph by email (josephgliddon at hotmail dot com) or PM. Any passworded race files that find their way to me will be forwarded to him - if you send any non-passworded race files I will warn you & suggest you use a different race (none so far).
Player list:
.. Player ......... Character
1. Micha .......... Olympias
2. Wizard ......... Demetrius
3. Shadow Whist ... Pyrrhus
4. AlexTheGreat ... Eumenes
5. Steve .......... Phillip III
6. neilhoward ..... Ptolemy
7. Combat ......... Cleitos
8. NeoGrendal ..... Peucestas
9. Dashiva ........ Cassander
10. Thieflord ..... Ceraunus

I'd choose a large universe if I had the choice...

640 planets is too many for 10 players.
The universe will be large/sparse (384 planets).
When using UC you can't really place the cities at the very edge of a universe because they move around with each remapping + the universe dimensions change - always smaller than the standard dimensions, especially when a small sensitivity is used (as is the case here - still finishing the testing atm but likely to use: Sensitivity = 11, Min. Distance between stars = 5, other settings = default).
Assuming a universe of around 1550x1550ly with the 10-player template as announced earlier I expect the distance between cities to be around 300ly.
If you are sending Joseph your race file by:
1. PM, ensure that you give him your email address & any race PW you set.
2. Email, ensure that you tell him your AH handle (username) & any race PW you set.

16 players. Ptolemy won by player vote in 2502. They ended up as follows:
Character PRT Planets Escorts Capital Techs Resources Score Rank
Ptolemy . JOAT . 120 .. 6471 .. 1640 . 141 .. 178k .. 8381 .. 1
Cleitos .. CA ... 96 .. 3324 ... 708 . 139 .. 144k .. 6864 .. 2

Lysimachos JOAT .. 1`..... 0 ..... 0 . 119 .... 2k ... 421 . 14
Alcetas . IS-f ... DEAD
Craterus . SS .... DEAD
Note that JOATs & CAs were not penalised but they are in Diadochi 2.
Important Events:
MEGA-ALLIANCE: In approx. 2415 Ptolemy & Alcetas went to war over an outpost. Eumenes & Cleitos were also under threat by Alcetas & a 3-member alliance was born with the specific goal of removing Alcetas. Some time in the 20s or 30s (can't remember exactly when) Seleucos joined the alliance & this mega-alliance pretty much decided the game. In the early/mid 80s that alliance was disolved to try & increase interest for the other players. The fact that the mega-alliance contained the only CA in the game boosted the economies of the other alliance members enormously. The 3rd place finish for Seleucos was pretty lucky since the LL & R alliance had picked them as their target &, since Seleucos had all expensive techs relied on the other alliance members to remain competitive.
Leonnadis, Lysimachos & Roxana were a fairly strong alliance as well but struggled to keep up & when Roxana was backstabbed by one of the smaller races (late 60s/early 70s?) by gating in warships when the 2 races were set as friends not only decimated Roxana but resulted in Leonnadis & Lysimachos being forced to divert forces to defend Roxana. Lysimachos finally gave up in the mid-80s & Leonnadis/Ptolemy formed an uneasy alliance to divide up the Thracian (Lysimachos) empire. Lysimachos had been ranked #5 IIRC.
Antigonos/Pyrrus were both AR but were isolated together with their only neighbours being Eumenes & Cleitos & the races appeared to be developing reasonably well when Cleitos turned on them. Cleitos was too strong & their starbase-based pop plummeted. Antigonos & Pyrrhus were forced into servitude to avoid destruction.
Cleitos led for most of the game & Ptolemy only took the lead in the last 5 or so years.
Steve & I played. Joseph (our host) also played.

Sulpholobus wants to join the game as Roxana so, assuming that you guys have no objections I will:
1. Add 2 cities.
2. Increase density from sparse to normal meaning that each city will have about 4 extra planets.
I haven't created the new 11-player (22 city) template but I expect to be able to leave the universe at large.
I'll try to get things done within the current timeframe but I might need an extra day.

BackStab Rule questions - just a few |

Can you please explain more about the backstab rules.
ie:
Can you please give another example of the method, looking at the formula, I am confused, but numbers do that to me .
formula is: ((a+b+c+alliance size)/4)% where a=6,b=4,c=2
I see the formula, but what is it compared to to determine if it is triggered?
How is Alliance size determined?
What determines an alliance (friend status, do we formally declare alliances, what about NAPS, what about Neutral status?)
Is there a grace period after 1 backstab to the next within the effected alliance or can 1 alliance be decimated by BS after BS after BS?
what is "backstab should be substantial" (kill some mines, bomb 1 planet, explode some mines, Kill a Fort, or gates into 10 AR US's worlds and kills them all.
BSee is determined by rank, but public scores not on till yr 2480. BS Calc starts in 2440, So does that mean the host needs to check every file every year to do the calc?
Idea:
Once the backstab is done, would be interesting to have the fact declared to all and what was done
(ie: told in yr to BS player X, initiated BS in Yr X, killed X ships, X planets bombed, X pop killed.)

It is compared to a random number between, say, 1 to 400 (since the % chance is a multiple of 1/4%). This can be achieved easily enough using the RAND() function in Excel.
See the end of this post for a table showing % chances.

I'm glad you asked that since this was a bone of contention in the original Diadochi Wars - i.e. what defined an ally?
For the purpose of this game any player setting someone else to "friend" recognises that someone as an ally.
Now that I think about it, there is also a possible loophole whereby 2 players change their relationship in order to muck about with the alliance size so I think we need an extra rule (pity, too many rules are not good) to disallow alliance changes between 2 players more often than once per 10 years.
Opinions?

No grace period. Remember tho that only the highest ranking member of an alliance can be backstabed & that the backstaber & backstabee must be set to enemy for a minimum period of 10 years afterwards.

It should involve at least a serious attempt to take a planet but the bigger the better & there is no maximum.

Yes. I'll create a little spreadsheet for the purpose so that Joseph just needs to maintain alliances & open it each year where it will state what backstab (if any) is to be undertaken & who is to undertake it.
BTW the starting year was changed from 2440 to 2450 in an earlier post.

I think it best to leave this to the players. There's nothing to stop anyone privy to the info from announcing it or telling other selected players (once the backstab has occured - before that the backstaber is banned from telling the backstabee & probably should keep it secret from any other player they don't trust).
If the size of backstab were announced by the host it could be tantamount to an invitation for the wolves to dine.
% Chance of a backstab
Since we have 11 players a, b & c (Players ranked #1, #2 & #3) are all included in the formula: ((a+b+c+alliance size)/4)%
Alliance Includes ......... % Chance
Player Ranked .......... Alliance Size
#1 .. #2 .. #3 .......... 4 .. 3 .. 2
Yes . Yes . Yes ....... 4.00 3.75 N/A
Yes . Yes . No ........ 3.50 3.25 3.00
Yes . No .. Yes ....... 3.00 2.75 2.50
Yes . No .. No ........ 2.50 2.25 2.00

The 2nd Diadochi War - 11-player template |
Mon, 20 October 2008 18:51 |

I've uploaded the 11-player UC template & you can view it here:
UC Template: http://mcdonaldjk.fileave.com/Dia211.bmp
With City Names: http://mcdonaldjk.fileave.com/Dia211Anno.bmp
It should be OK but I still want to test it, particularly because there are more planets so I might need to adjust UC settings.
However, I might not be able to do this until tomorrow due to work pressure + need to do stuff for my wife's UK/USA trip & deliver her to the airport tomorrow.
