I've noticed that in theory massive fleets of missile CCs/BBs are very good, yet in the games I'm playing it seems like I never have enough ironium to mass produce them. Even if I do, I make one generation of ships; when those ships are obsolete 5-10 turns later, I'm left with not enough ironium to build new fleets.
Is it generally considered a good idea to save ironium for higher tech levels, as in not use missiles (except for SB's) until one has Doomsdays/Armageddons? Or possibly use remote mining to get more ironium? What if you're playing a race with OBRM?

Early (Jihad) missiles are very useful & not easy to counter because chaff is so expensive but whether & how extensively you use them is largely dependant upon your enemy. The key in warfare is in assembling the correct ship mix - if you're winning battles & thus losing few ships then any fleet is cheap. i.e. the cost is in lost ships rather than the number built.
Once your ships are obsolete any that have no significant use should be scrapped to recover most of your minerals.
If you have OBRM you really can't afford to use remote mining until the end game when it does become feasible due to miniaturisation. You can, however, colonise red planets - the mining return can be significant.
BTW Germ & Iron crunches are common but you can definitely experience a Bor crunch too - in Babylon 5 v2 IIRC most members of the IA alliance had plenty of Germ (no -f races or ARs) and sufficient Iron but were short of Bor.

One more point:
The final cost is really Ships Lost minus minerals recovered including salvage from battles regardless of who built the destroyed ships.
When considering an offense v a planet you should include the minerals donated to your enemy should you lose - it can be enough to change the course of the war. As a defender I have been known to make me look a soft target in the hope of getting a mineral winfall. In Sixpack 2 I must have picked up more than 200,000Kt in successful defenses of my AR bases.

Using plenty of sappers makes your missiles MUCH more effective.
