I wrote this response without realising that the original was in a private forum for which I have no PW so I stuck it here.

as far as your "Joined and planned actions against another player are NOT ok except you do it together with your ally" rule, its got a really gapping hole in it. what if I ally with player #3 in 2420 and we agree to attack player #4 together. it takes time to build ships and cross space, so by 2430 when I have legally chosen to ally with player #2 (because 10 years have passed) and stick it to that vile pile of rottenness player #4 I will have player #3 potentially still attacking player #4 in a coordinated manner with me. I didn't break any rules to get to this point, nor has my former ally.

AFAIK you are not REQUIRED to change allies every 10 years so the rule actually supports your case - i.e. an alliance must last at least 10 years whereas, w/o that rule, an alliance can change as often as you like.

Naturally, if an intended ally wants a really short alliance you should expect that he's up to a bit of no good & make your decisions accordingly. Otherwise, the allies would normally agree a period that suits the purpose.

Since a player can have only one ally at a time in this game I expect that alliances will be reasonably long since chopping & changing alliances disrupts development quite a bit (& for that reason it's important that you choose your ally wisely).
