I was just confused, but it seems that targetting takes place after each movement round, correct?

i lost a battle because my chaff shredders (which were built with sappers) didn't close range...pretty stupid mistake probably..but i didn't know how the battle system worked...i'm guessing i need a new design without sappers then??

I think targets are reevaluated during movement.

I think targets are reevaluated during movement. This is only a factor due to amt/range damage parsed into battleplanese.

Targets are definitely reevaluated.

For example capital missiles might fire at chaff rather than shielded beam BBs in round one, then in round two the shields on the BBs are sapped making them more attractive & the missiles might switch to the BBs. The same thing happens as ships take damage.

Let me guess, the ship was with:
* sappers, range 3
* lasers, range 2
* battle orders: maximize damage ratio.

It's a common problem and almost everybody has experienced it at least once... before learning how to avoid it. The ship moves into range for the sappers but without the lasers getting into range. This way it tries to follow the given battle orders: maximize damage on enemy while minimzing damage to itself.

There are 2 ways to avoid this:
a) don't mix range 3 and range 2 weapons on a ship
or
b) do not use "maximize damage ratio" but "maximize net damage" or maximize damage" and the ships should strife to move into range for all weapons

no, i used range 3 beamer with range 3 sappers and range 3 lasers...

it only moved two spaces instead of the 3 it could move and targeted the bb instead of moving 3 spaces forward and sapping the BB while beaming the lasers like i expected.

OK, so your ships moved into range of a ship with shields and then proceeded to attack that ship with everything.

Whereas you were hoping it would move into range of two types ships, fire its sappers at one ship and fire the beams at another ships.

Is that correct?

Not sure what you mean by only moving 2 spaces when it could move 3. If the ship can move 3 it should move 3 - even if it doesn't go where you had hoped.

hmm, i thought it only moved 2 and didn't move 3...oh well, it's last turn so i can't check now..but i'm going to guess that it moved circularly or something and didn't try to close with its last move on the chaff..which should have been the priority target

sometimes i don't understand the priorities of the ships..i'm guessing it had something to do with minimizing damage taken...so full damage output to one enemy BB while having return fire by only that BB is considered better than moving in range of both, firing at the chaff, and then getting return fire from the enemy BB + the chaff...

oh well, i guess i should just make maximize damage my default order? or maybe maximize net damage..i think i forgot to do that this game..is there any benefit to one over the other?

A tip: NEVER use sappers on chaff-shredders. Only beams. Sappers made ships behave strange, no matter what orders they have.

This might have something to do with the fact ships act differently if they can take out the entire shields of a stack or not? ... can't remember the details ... Could have caused the anti-chaff BB to not move into range of the chaff ...

Deal Much will depend on specific ship designs
Deal Always testbed 1st

I would go with Max damage not max net, you want those ships to get in and kill and not worry about being hit.

Perhaps if sappers don't lose 10% damage due to range like beams, then that could explain it. However, I'm pretty sure they do lose the 10%.

As iztok said, never put sappers on your shredders, their job is to kill chaff, sappers don't help, and you don't really care about stack size, so every additional beam does help.

Max damage always (unless your battle plan specifically is designed otherwise and you have testbedded).

About a year ago I lost a pivotal battle because I hadnt changed my default orders and my beam fleet danced around out of range like babies afraid to get their feet wet. Only after my allies ships had been destroyed did they work out that they needed to close the gap to have any chance against jihads. They did kill a few but then went down in flames.

Doubly embarassing because my ally was Jason Cawley and I had been hoping to learn a few tricks from him rather than show him I was an idiot.

It does irritate me that I have to change the default orders in every game I play - it would be much better if Stars remembered the change in one game and applied that to all new games.
Oh well

Somethings along this line, yes. IIRC it is if they can sap, they don't close in. At least that was how I won "Well's bottom" many years ago: 've split my DN fleet in two so each half was not able to sap the shields on opponent's Disruptor BBs, so my DNs closed in to to get in range of my Mark-IV blasters. Sweet memory that game... Very Happy

I don't remember that nifty useful little quirk being mentioned anywhere. Pirate

Would it work the same with all weapons classes, or just with sappers? Shocked

Yeah so Im a little confused.
So does a sapper work better on a frigate or a destroyer with range 3 lazer and a sapper?
