Lol well I'm here all the time because I'm British and there's no point going anywhere in Britain because it's always raining. Hit over head

Back to the subject, if you're the last one the game should be beginning soon! I can't wait Very Happy

Same here! How did you come across stars?

PS after what I said earlier, I will be away this weekend. I'll be back at home saturday evening, so I should be in plenty of time for the beginning of the game.

I've now received 4 final & legal races as follows:

Effluvient Walrus (race file in)
Airny (race file in)
Beanspoon (race file in)
Factor (race file in)

Waiting only for Tibia.

Soobie has offered to coach a player so just need one more to enable this good idea. Thank you Soobie!

We have 4 coaches so we need ONE ONLY Intermediate or above player to coach a beginner.

We need the full quota of 5 so that everyone has a coach since it would be unfair for an uncoached beginner having to take on 4 coached ones so

ONE MORE VOLUNTEER COACH PLEASE

Re lack of one coask:
This shouldn't hold you back to start the game, since we're not supposed to have much of a direct influence on the game, so the player without a coach shouldn't be at a disadvantge (that was my idea of it, i.e. the 5 turn delay on comments). I mean there should plenty of time to find the last one, but I know one player will (and should) feel left out.

Game host: when you start, could you send us a mail so we can find consensus on what to say and not to say. To set it going I see two levels of it: game fundamentals (MM tips, guts etc.) and the really hard part where all you should do is ask the right questions to put the 'apprentice' on the right track. (if you do want to start talking now, start a thread in the bar)

Hi again, I'm back from my weekend away! Glad to see you haven't started without me! Damn I'm looking forward to this game!

Perhaps you should post a thread on the bar forum asking for one more coach. That might work...

I'd really like a coach for each player. While the delay factor means that the player acts alone before receiving commentary as opposed to acting after advice, there is still a substantial advantage since the commentary should help to improve decision making as the game progresses.

Sure. I'll put a little thought into it in the next 24 hours & put a starting postion and we can all then discuss it.

When I find the time I'll also put together a tip sheet.

I think I should include the coaches in turn automailing too so that, even though they can't make comments until later, they can think about things as time becomes available.

I think you missed my last post. What don't you advertise on the bar for an extra coach - it's where the experienced players go, so it would be perfect (because experienced players don't necessarily check this thread, seeing as it's for beginners)

Oh and btw I agree, coaches should be on the automailing sheet.

We have delayed mentoring which means we can mostly tell you what you did wrong. It is better to have the "basics" before mentoring is effective.

I am not sure what the "basics" every player in this game has had, but before starting this game, I suggest that all of you read the 5 articles under "Basic Stars! Strategy" at http://wiki.gible.net/index.php?title=Article_Library if you have not done so already. You should be applying the tips in those articles extensively in your games.

I think we all have some grounding in stars even if it's just playing against (and sometimes getting beaten by Embarassed) the computer.

A suggestion: Play a few practice games up to 2420 against the computer using your game race design applying the tips in the "basic" articles.

By 2420, you should be ranked #1 and usually with #1 in res as well. This is a good test to pass before your real game.

I've found that using "expert" (not really lol) Turindrone AIs works best. Unlike some of the AI races, they actually expand at a moderate rate, not spamming dozens of colonies like the HE, PP, and AR races or barely expanding at all like the others. They also build minefields and send destroyers to harass you early on, forcing you to build some rudimentary defenses and be careful when sending colony fleets into their space.

Oh I'm almost always winning now - still got to properly get the hang of the new PRTs, but I'm just about there now. I'll try that with the Turindrones

Hey all, sorry for the late delay.
i will ahve to withdraw from this game as i am aware that i will be away for 2 weeks in august. (around turn 30). i will be too behind when i come back and i dont think everyone would want to wait two weeks for my return.

maybe i will join another beginner game in sept

It might take longer than 2 weeks to get this game going if you drop out Tibia; I'd be happy to wait when you have to be away so we can get this game started already. With Shadow Whist, do we have 5 mentors?

I think it would be cool if we could eventually post our "advice" to share for other new players. Then other players could examine what people say and maybe add their comments.

anyway... I plan to ask the player how they were thinking to play that race and then to start by offering general guidelines on that playing style.

Is it out of order for a more experienced player have a look at the beginning player's race before the game begins and give a few general comments on how they would play the race, prior to the game starting?

Joseph has already checked out the race designs & provided advice.

I see no reason why a player's coach can't provide a general game strategy in 2400.

Since Tibia has backed out we have a spare slot.

Oldmedalhead gets first option since he wanted in if there was a 2nd game.

If we do not have a 5th player by Sunday, we go with 4 players in a small/normal universe since I'm sure you're all rearing to go.

Thanks. The intention is to provide advice after a 5 year delay. eg. The 2425 turn can be adviced upon in 2430. More often than weekly would be good but we'll take weekly if that's what you can manage.

I'm not sure how best to match players with mentors - I might just assign them if noone has objections.
