May I join?

By the time you realize how steep the curve is, you will be using five types of calculus to get to the market. You will then need three different calculators to perform what you once considered basic arithmetic.

I am a little confused as to the hab requirement. I think you should drop it. I like the CA restriction BUT, CA is such a powerfull PRT that for a beginner game you should ban it. Even making it take Ultimate Recycling and Mineral Alchemy aren't going to hurt it much.

Stick with the meddium universe - it's a nice size to play a full game in.

I'll be happy to check everyone's files and host the game if you'ld like.

I don't see any problem with the hab requirement, but then I've not played much MP - what's wrong with it?

In general, there is nothing actually wrong with the hab requirement. However, making all races use the center point of the hab ranges isn't going to do much more than hurt race designs and handicap them. It seems that there will be enough players for the game to make it a good game so, the hab restriction is not necessary.

I think we're up to 6 players, including you. It was 5 after I joined, then knightpraetor dropped and neilhoward joined.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but current players are: Effluviant Walrus, Magic, Nike71, f7redrik, Adacore, neilhoward, Shadow Whist. Two slots still left for anyone else who wants to join, right?

Hmm - something m.a@stars said in another forum reminded me - I lost my serial years ago (I bought one of the Xplosiv copies that didn't include a serial and never made a decent permanent record of the one they gave me when I phoned up). So I'm using a keygen'ed serial now - will that be a problem for MP play, and if so how do I go about getting a new one?

Up to $6? Is that right? That's so little it'd be swallowed up in paypal fees, surely - will Ron mind if I send more? Should I mail him or something too, or is the donation enough?

Also - how how quickly should I expect a response from Ron?

EDIT: Setting up a Paypal account, which I guess will take a couple of days, since I seem to have forgotten the details of my old one.

Just send Ron a PM and discuss it with him. I'm certain he wouldn't mind if you want to donate more than $6. He built Autohost and has run it for the Stars! community for free at his own cost for many years.

I doubt that it would take more than a week to have it all arranged.

Ptolemy - You hosting the game would take a load off my mind and probably make everything go a lot smoother, so if the offer still stands, I'm fine if you do it. It was a bit weird for me to try to host my first game anyway.

On CA - I find CA a bland and broken PRT but I wanted to avoid outright banning any PRT. Do you think requiring it to take weapons expensive (tree-hugging hippies make love not war) and banning it from lowering its factory/mine costs (environmentalists opposes expanding polluting industry) in addition to the other stuff would nerf it enough?

On the hab reqs - I had meant them to force everyone to create races who's habs overlapped at least a little (I also expected people's habs to tend to be closer to the right as it gives more points, so I think they would overlap more than expected). However, as I see how it can crimp some race designs, I'll put in another clause to allow a (narrow) off-center band if the player is willing to center or immunize everything else.

Yes, the offer to host the game is still open. You will need someone to check the race files for you anyway since you have pre-requisites defined so I may as well take care of both tasks.

Making CA take weaps expensive would hurt it some and banning it from having cheap factories and mines would certainly crimp it. CA is definitely not a broken PRT - it is by far the strongest PRT in Stars!. I wouldn't be surprised though that by not allowing a CA to have cheap mines and factories if you end up with someone making a factoryless CA. Banning the Orbital Adjuster won't hurt the CA at all - it will prevent him from using them to terraform allies worlds. To 'unterraform' enemy planets he'll simply use retro bombs.

all habs must include the center point (immunities are ok). However, one hab may not include the center if the other two are both either exactly centered or immune.

Am I in the clear if two of my hab ranges cross the center line and the third is centered?

Yes. Either:

  • All three habs must include the center. <- your race apparently falls into this category, so its fine.
  • Two habs must be centered and the third can be whatever you want. <- if you centered one more of your habs, then it would be valid regardless of where the third hab was.

Ok, after some testbedding I put up the last restriction to CA (its so obscenely powerful...); +f CAs cannot reduce their factory or mine costs at all.

Anyway, I'll second Adacore's w00t! I assume we'll be sending race files to Ptolemy?

Medium, normal, distant galaxy <- EDIT: if we get a full 8 players, we'll make it dense

I don't really mind either way, but I'm not sure a dense universe would be a great idea. More experienced players can perhaps give better advice, but I think medium normal is seen as perfectly adequate for an 8 player game, right?

Also, when are we aiming to start? I still need to get my paypal set up and get a new serial from Ron.

To Adacore: you can start to play with keygenned serial. There would be no any problems.

To Ptolemy: please let us know your e-mail.

To All: send your race files to Ptolemy via PM or e-mail.

P.S. Sorry my english Smile
