Hello, Stars! community.

I have an idea about game format. Let me tell you about it.
1. Sorry for my english. Smile
2. If it's not a peace of news, sorry again.

The Rules
The game is for 8 players. The goal is to take maximum Game Points (GP).
Now please look at this picture:

8 circles there are players (P1...P8)
Lines between players are relations. Green - ally, red - enemy. If there are no line between players - they are neutral to one another.
Now look at green P1 circle. I'll try to explain the rules on example of Player 1. The goal of P1 is to "protect" P2 and P8, and to destroy P4 and P6.
- If enemy (P4 or P6) is destroyed - P1 gets +1GP.
- If ally (P2 or P8) is destroyed - P1 gets -1GP.
- If P1 itself is destroyed - he gets -2GP.

Game ends, when there no chance to get more GPs for every one. Player with maximum GP score wins the game.

Game settings
Relations displayed on the picture are virtual. It's not a Stars! relations. Diplomacy and relations in game are free.

8 Players.
Universe - Small Packed (may be Medium Dense).
Players Positions - Distant.
AccBBS+, Public Player Score+
CA banned. JOAT with NAS banned.
No cheats, except chaff and spleet fleet.

Universe is random. But i need help in generating universe: players must be placed like on my picture. Player number is random too.
I'm hosting the game and not playing, if there will be 8 players.

Thank you.

I think the game idea sounds interesting. To make it more interesting consider randomizing the player numbers and individually let each player know who his allies and enemies are without anyone else knowing. I think that would add alot of intrigue to the mix.

I'd be interested to play in this if it gets going.

Well, i think player can't have an influence on player, who is close to victory in this situation... But this aspect can be specified by poll before game start.

Also i didn't say... GP score is public and is updating when someone changes it.

If I understand, the idea is to protect your neighbors from everyone else and kill off your two opposing enemies. A very interesting game, and I'd like to play when you have enough.

The picture is important, and not impossible to duplicate in a game. I've played in galaxies more complex than this.

Victor.

The only potential hiccup I can see is that if two allied races get a decent way ahead then they can just obliterate the four races they're not allied to and end up with equal points. For example if players 1 and 2 make a mutual pact not to attack 3 or 8 and wipe out 4, 5, 6 and 7 then they both end with +2GP.

But just in writing that down I thought of the solution - as soon as it reaches this stage with 4 players left, the only thing for 1 to do will be attack 3, while 2 will have to attack 8 - then it becomes a bit of a strange game: a race against your ally to wipe out their remaining minor ally.

EDIT: The main thing that's going to throw up problems will be players dropping. If anyone drops it completely throws the balance of the game, giving a big advantage to their enemies and a big disadvantage to their allies. But I guess that's true of all team games.

So, you can help to generate the universe with circular players positions? It's will bw nice...

Yes, but as you said - dropping is always a problem... Replacements will be needed.

It's not clear to me whether you intend that:
1. all planets will be positioned within the circles or
2. the HWs will be circular & the universe will otherwise be standard.

If (1) then it is likely to take quite a few remappings if ITs &/or PPs are involved because of their 2nd HW.

I can setup the universe for you in either case but I would probably need:
(1) with ITs/PPs involved: several days
(1) without ITs/PPs: one day
(2) with ITs/PPs involved: 2-3 days to position 2nd HWs.
(2) without ITs/PPs: 1-2 days

BTW I think that a medium, standard universe would be best. 288 stars/8 players = 36 planets each on average.

I will bite (already have 2 many games on the go but this one looks too interesting to pass up).
Would be good if we could firm up on what the uni size/density will be.

Just to clarify, I'm in as well. I agree that a medium/standard would work. As each race kills off another, it would be important to be able to expand appropriately.

I haven't genned a galaxy like this, but I've played in one. The Diadochi wars was a re-creation of the Mediterranean sea in which each player represented a specific line of royalty. We fought to see who would be the rightful heir to Alexander's throne.

Diadochi Wars was my baby & was my first scenario, remapping & hosting (hence my AH handle). The circles in that scenario represented cities & planets formed tight circles with voids between. This one simply repositions HWs.

So I'll do the setup then. Players may as well send race files to me then by PM or to mcdonaldjk at bigpond dot com. I will need your race password if you use one.

Thanks, Alex.

So what's the count so far? Looks like we'll need a solid 8 to play.

I've read the thread and I have doubts about the idea.
This sounds like an unsolvable problem you designed. If everybody plays without making mistakes in diplomacy and being careful, then the game won't end!
I think an early sneak attack on one of your opponents' HW would be a nice idea. I see no other way to get an advantage without annoying the others too much.

The trick is that the universe is standard, but the homeworlds are placed in an octagon patter. (Octahedron is actually an 8-sided die).
The real fun in this galaxy would be in the middle of the map - kind of a no-man's land where all races would be racing for planets and fighting each other off.

But I would feel protected by my neighbors and always try to protect them, so I have two allies and only one person that would help me kill my enemy (why should my ally agree to help me kill MY enemy?)

No you have 2 people that you want to kill. (your 2 enemies)

Each of these people have 1 person apart from you that wants to kill them. These people are not heavily interested in you living or dying (your 2 possible attacking allies).

Then you have 2 players that dont want you to die and you dont want them to die (your 2 defending allies).

Leaving one person who couldnt care less about you - but will probably care about who you attack or defend (The Irritant).

The trick will be to hunt with the hounds and run with the hare.

If all who posted replies here will join, we'll have 6 players (7, if i'll play)

we have 1(2) more rooms. 2 more players is preferable.
