Current state: Micha is going to superhost, he'll be back from holiday today and will let us know when and how we should send our race files.
We have ten players and two who reported in too late (backups), except that Joseph may well withdraw in favour of one the backups:
jimroberts, rolfverberg, m.a @ stars, Darkwyng, Aphar, Michael (private contact), Kettch, q974739, Sulpholobus and Joseph;
backups djf01, Hilton.

Dropout detection and recovery: third turn missed without any contact counts as dropout. Micha will have your passwords and will give your password to a replacement if you drop out. You will have to send your history files in every few moves at least to simplify life for any replacement you make necessary. Probably you email history files to me, but Micha may know a better way.

Victory conditions are as shown on the updated OP. Not everybody is totally happy with them, but apparently willing to live with them.

I'll put all the relevant information on the game page when we get one.

If there is another pre-start dropout, email me - direct @ hjanfield@shaw.ca - and expect a race file within 24 hours.

If there is an in-game dropout, I may be interested in taking the slot. Even on a losing race - I'm getting very good at playing the loser! (I tend to end up being quite a thorn to some people)

Ok I have been playing for about 7 years and in that time I have won about 3 or 4 games - hitting the 25K by 2450 benchmark is easy for me.
Lets do a quick straw poll and if no-one finds me too scary to play against then I will send in my race to Micha. If anyone does object then I cheerfully hand over my slot to one of the 2 reserves.
Joseph

Micha is back and has contacted me.

What he needs initially is a list of players with sah forum name and email address, so that he knows who to expect something from. So please all email me so that I can compile the list for him. Don't send me your race files. You can mail me through the email option in my profile, or directly to jim dot roberts squigglything web dot de. Send your race files and passwords to Micha after he gets the list from me. The race file should be clearly related to your sah forum name, that simplifies setup for him. Obviously for a DOS file name you have to remove any non-alphanumeric characters and shorten to eight characters. The address to send files and passwords is micha squigglything starsautohost dot org.

Try to get your mail off to me within 24 hours of this posting. Tomorrow at this time, I'll start to worry that anybody who hasn't mailed has changed his mind.

I expect to hear from rolfverberg, m.a @ stars, Aphar, Michael, q974739, Sulpholobus and (?) Joseph. (Darkwyng, Michael and Kettch I already have addresses for.)

djf01: I have your address. You will be on the list if Joseph decides to leave.
Hilton: you should mail me too, there is still a chance a slot will become free.

Well, I hope everybody has testbedded their 25k-by-2450 benchmarks too, so you shouldn't win too easily on that alone. Twisted Evil

Actually, is that with accelerated start or with 25pop at start?

I meant I can hit the 25K by 50 standard benchmark pretty easily. That benchmark is for a accelerated start.

Interestingly I was hitting over 25K by turn 50 with one of the races I designed for this game (and that was with 25pop) - but the race had too narrow a hab so I abandoned it as it relied too much on lucky planet draw (another testbed with that race struggled to hit 12K due to unlucky planet draw).

I have decided not to play as the reserves are keen and new players should be encouraged to play.

By the way - not to reopen the CA debate - but I bet I can get 25K easy with a TT CA Razz

Yes, I have similar finding. A compromise between counting on a lucky draw or settling for a little less, maybe 15k at 2050 with 25pop. Accelerated is quite easy indeed.

I won't be playing CA, it sounds much more fun to try to prove them wrong Smile

Cheers, Rolf.

Getting started

We're nearly there!

Players are: jimroberts, rolfverberg, m.a @ stars, Darkwyng, Aphar, Kettch, q974739, Sulpholobus, djf01, Hilton. (Michael and Joseph have withdrawn in favour of djf01 and Hilton.)
I'm making a list relating those forum user names to email addresses. When this is complete, I'll send it to Micha so that he knows who to expect race files from. Make the name of your race file as near as possible to your forum user name. Send your race files and passwords to micha atsquiggle starsautohost dot org after he tells us he's ready for them.

I now have addresses for all but rolfverberg. Maybe my email provider is blocking him for some reason. (I'm jim dot roberts atsquiggle web dot de.)

Once we get going, we play every day, including weekends, up to at least 2430. When two people want to drop to three times a week 2430 or later, we do that. We probably will agree to slow down further at a late stage. We can have pauses for unexpected problems or important holidays.

Game parameteres:
Pebbles in the sky
Large, dense, distant: no options selected.
Four of the following after at least 100 years -
- 30% planets
- level 25 in 5 fields
- score 9000
- 30% more score than 2nd player
- 150 000 resources
- 300 capital ships
- highest score after 130 years.

Chaff OK.
Split fleet dodge OK.
Battle board overload: counts as cheating.
North-south/east-west minefield avoidance: counts as cheating.
Starbase friendly fire bug: counts as cheating.
Modifying game files: counts as cheating.
Playing two (or more!) races: counts as cheating.

In my (limited) experience, cheating hasn't been a problem. If you detect an apparent cheat, we'll get Micha to adjudicate whether it was an accident.

To simplify replacement of a dropout, send your history file to Micha every five years.

You count as a dropout if you miss three turns in a row and don't respond to messages.

I've probably forgotten something important Smile

Whoopsy, I've already sent my racefile to Micha. Impatient me... Rolling Eyes

Also, perhaps we could find some name other than "Pebbles in the sky" for a 10-player, yearlong game potentially riddled with giant unbeatable CAs? I'd suggest "The Big Thing" if nothing more blood-curling comes along. Twisted Evil

IMO Pebbles can be pretty blood-curling, if used in the right way.

My race eg uses Pebbles slung at Warp 17 to catch Space Cows. I wouldn't want to redesign my race at this stage. Very Happy
