Hello,
I have Win XP Home SP2 and want to run Stars! (Orig. 2.7b, patched to 2.7j, german version). Unfortunately, I get a violation error from time to time. I have read through the posts, installed DOSBox and have an old version of WIN98. But what now? Install Win98 as dual boot or start DOSBox and ...?
May sound funny, but I am no expert on these things; but I want to play Stars! again.
Thanks in advance.

Absolutely should be no problem running under XP SP2 - I do. You may have something else pre-loaded that could be interfering - but it would be a guess to know what. No need for a DOS box for sure - that may be your problem.
Post additional information here and we'll manage to get it fixed I'm sure. You can also mail me using ptolemy dot stars at gmail dot com.

Yes,
you do have a Stars.ini file. It is in your Windows directory. However, since this happens when you open the battle screen it is most likely what Micha stated - the sound drver. So, 2 options - disable the sound or download the 2.6jrc4 version here:
http://starsautohost.org/files/stars26jrc4.zip
and use it. Also, if you are going to use the 2.7 version in german that you download and use the JRC3 version here:
http://starsautohost.org/files/stars27jrc3-german.zip
For the 2.7 version you should disable the sound.

The only differences between JRC3 and JRC4 were a couple modifications made to host processing of turns. As far as playing goes there is no difference so you can use either version.

I get the occassional blue screen and the occassional exception error when running Stars under XP SP2.
In games against the AI or tests it usually crops up during gentime.
Just sayin.

This problem has been corrected by turning the sound off. The topic is now locked.
