Hey Gang,
So, if I was doing really well then accidentally gave an opponent the tech to build battleships(Oops! Embarassed Shocked ), is there a way to restore the game to some earlier point? Sure would like it if they didn't have those battleships Evil or Very Mad .

Of course your opponent might have researched BB tech all by himself. Wink And if he hasn't he probably will, you can't stop him.

Are you playing a solo game versus the AI? You could restore from backup (if you have them) by simply copying the files out of the backup folder into your play folder.
By default Stars! keeps only a backup of the previous year, you can let Stars! make backups from multiple years by opening your Stars!.ini file and adding "Backups=###" under the [Misc] section. Replace ### by the number of backups you'd like.

If you are playing a game versus humans I doubt your opponent will let you turn back the clock without protest. Wink

LOL! Yes, I am playing the computer! Laughing You all scare me. Shocked

I playing Humanoid JOAT against two random players that both turned out to be hyper-expanders. They spread like bugs! I was doing fairly well but left two damaged BBs at one of race A's worlds thinking they would easily kill the starbase Twisted Evil . Turns out they learned about tougher starbases from race B and crushed my BBs. Doh! Shocked I would have liked the tech difference to last longer because I was really close to getting two fields to Tech 22 to win the game. Surprised Well, I paid for the game and I'm getting my $$ worth, huh?

OH, thanks for the advice about restoring. I tried the files in the BACKUP folder. Successful, but of course, I must do a lot of work over again... Rolling Eyes

That was easy. Can I increase that 'ScanZoom=6' to magnify closer to objects?

Use binoculars?

If you want to set a route close to an object and detest the snap to grid 'feature' you can hold down the shift key while re-setting your route. (the usual reason for wanting to zoom closer)

You do know that they didn't get BB tech directly from you? They can't jump from for example con6 to con13 in one turn just by killing your two BBs, at most they can get ONE level of construction from that battle. As I said before they might (and problably) have researched con13 by themselves...

No, that value is just what Stars! remebers as being last used. 'ScanZoom=6' means last time you exited Stars! you had your zoom set to 125%.

While you are at it, you should add "NewReports=1" under the [Misc] section as well. When you dump Planet Information to a text file it will offer more information ... Useful when you step up to playing humans and want to trade planet information or coordinate teamplay.

Hey Gang,
So, if I was doing really well then accidentally gave an opponent the tech to build battleships(Oops! Embarassed Shocked ),

That's what you get for deploying your valuable BBs out in the battlezones where those pesky enemies could shoot them down and grab their scientific secrets. Whip

Next time don't deploy any warships at all until you reach Nubians so they'll have to research their own. That'll teach 'em! Twisted Evil

Awww, why would you want to do that? You should be able to beat them easily anyway! Teleport

Like some of you said, the opponents got BBs on their own about two turns later. (This is after I went back a couple turns.) They were closer than I thought, I guess. I didn't know how much tech they could get from my BBs, so I assumed the worst.

How could you survive without building any warships until Nubians? Is that a total noob question?

I've been building up a big pile of minerals for the MT and when we finally, FINALLY met....I got a cargo pod. So lame. I wanted a BFG! It's like getting socks and underwear for Christmas when you really wanted the Red Rider BB gun!

Are you by any chance an SS race? SS loves the MT cargo pod.

I think I am a Jack of All Trades race. That's what the standard "Humanoids" are, right? Which are SS?

The SS pre-made race is the Nucleotid. And yes, the Humanoids are JoaT.

Next game, I'd like to try a different race. Have you played Nucleotids?

What non-humans/not JOAT do you all like?

Hm, I think everyone here would use a non predefined race ... OTOH nobody here is probably playing against the AI. Smile

Playing vs the AI and make it a challenge you would indeed have to cripple yourself, like using some of the predefined races, or play following the Primitive rules.

A rhetorical question, rather. Twisted Evil See, what I meant is, since you must build warships and what-not with your tech, you'll always be risking the enemy stealing your secrets. Don't count on your tech being always the best. Deal

Don't dismiss that pod so fast. It carries a cloak and it also allows adding cargo space to military ships that usually don't have it. Teleport

You should probably review Jason Cawley's "Federation", as explained, among other places, in the "Must know" Forum. Cool
