Hi, I used to play Stars! years ago, I have the retail 2.70 (with serial number). What is the preferred patch these days and is it a 'standalone' one?

Welcome back to Stars!
The last version of Stars! is the JRC4 patch which is what Autohost uses.
You can download it from Autohost here:

The last pactch for 2.7 was the JRC3 patch and, you can also download that on Autohost here:
http://starsautohost.org/files/stars27jrc3.zip
JRC4 is the best version to use since it was the very last version, however, either version is OK to use. The JRC4 version simply made a couple corrections in the host processing of multi-player games.
Both versions are complete .exe files - simply replace your existing stars.exe file. IF asked, simply enter your valid serial number - you will only have to do this once on any given computer.
